Exospheric looks nicely treated on the pick of his form and decent each-way value at the odds on offer in the 2016 Melbourne Cup at Flemington (04:00 UK time, Tuesday morning).
The four-year-old has won four of his 10 starts when trained by Sir Michael Stoute and took his form to a new level on seasonal reappearance when romping to a four-length success in the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket.
After travelling strongly behind the leaders under a confident Ryan Moore, Exospheric cruised into contention two from home before taking up the running approaching the last and quickening clear to beat Simple Verse.
It was a devastating display to defeat a dual Group 1 winner so comprehensively, and Exospheric had the six-runner field strung out like washing.
Solid run behind Big Orange
Backing Exospheric each-way ranks highly among Coral’s 2016 Melbourne Cup tips from Flemington.
Judged on the manner of that performance, he was sent off a heavily-backed favourite for the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Stoute’s fears about the rain softened ground proved correct, however, and he could only finish eighth behind stable companion Dartmouth.
Exospheric quickly bounced back to finish a solid third to the enterprisingly ridden Big Orange in the Group 2 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket and now meets the winner on 6lb better terms.
The son of Beat Hollow backed that up with a cracking fifth of 12 to Postponed in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York.
Closely matched with Jameka
Exospheric ran a blinder on his Australian debut for new trainers Lee and Anthony Freedman when third of 16 to Jameka in the ultra-competitive Caulfield Cup.
Exospheric also put in a decent peformance to be placed in the Caulfield Cup behind winner Jameka.
He stayed on from off the pace to be nearest at the finish and beaten 3 3/4 lengths. Exospheric now meets the winner, who got a far smoother passage, on 3lb better terms.
Given how the race panned out, it was a terrific effort and the Caulfield Cup is regarded as a key trial for this.
Exospheric also looks the type that could have more to offer now stepped up to 2m and, on the revised terms, is entitled to get much closer to Jameka.
Given that Jamelka is second-favourite for this it makes the selection, who can be backed at more than double that rival’s odds, look overpriced.
Another plus is that Exospheric has the services in the saddle of Damein Oliver, who has won the race three times courtesy of Doriemus (1995) Media Puzzle (2002) and Fiorente (2013).
