Thane Of Cawdor can rise to the occasion under Baker

Thane Of Cawdor reserves his best for Kempton, so looks decent value to land the 1m 3f handicap that gets proceedings underway on today’s eight-race card at the Sunbury-on-Thames venue (14:00).

The Joseph Tuite trained seven-year-old is a six-time winner at the track and four of those successes have come over this afternoon’s trip.

Thane Of Cawdor has also finished in the frame on six occasions and is now 1lb lower than when registering his last victory at the track back in November.

That gives the gelding every chance from a handicapping perspective and it looks significant that connections are now re-applying the cheekpieces, as he has a 50 per cent strike rate in them.

Another plus is that Thane Of Cawdor has the services of the in-form St Leger winning jockey George Baker in the saddle.

He is a fine judge from off the pace and Thane Of Cawdor is a hold-up horse that needs to be delivered as late as possible, suiting his style riding style perfectly.

Kempton tips: Dostoyevsky ready to deliver

Trainer David Lanigan does really well with his runners at the track and Dostoyevsky can provide him with another winner in the 1m 4f maiden (16:15).

The in-form Newmarket handler has a strike rate of just under 28 per cent at the venue in the past 12 months, saddling five winners and one placed from 18 runners.

In Dostoyevsky, he has a thrice-raced gelding who posted his best effort to date last time out over course and distance when fourth of 10 to Muntahaa.

Although eventually beaten 15 3/4 lengths, the three-year-old showed plenty of pace to lead until two from home and may well have done too much too early in what has turned out to be a hot contest.

The winner has won since to be rated 113 and ran well to finish fourth in the the St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday, the runner-up has also won and the third home Alyssa went on to win her next three starts to be rated 91.

That is extremely strong form,so this class 5 contest represents far calmer waters for Dostoyevsky and a nice opportunity for him to open his account.
