Five Championship tips for weekend clashes

The 2016/17 Championship season returns this weekend following the international break and the second tier clubs involved will be aiming to enjoy successful comeback outings across the country.

Huddersfield Town are currently leading the standings after just five games played in the division, while Fulham chase them closely in second and Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle United also sit in a promising position before matchweek six.

So, ahead of the latest fixtures, Coral outline five Championship tips for punters to enjoy from Friday night to Sunday afternoon…

Sharing of spoils between Reading and Ipswich

In the Championship’s Friday night match-up between Reading and Ipswich Town, both teams will be hoping to get a foothold in their campaign and kick on towards a strong run of results, having so far endured indifferent form.

Both sides will take to the pitch having won just one of their last five respective outings in all competitions, while they also earned narrow 1-0 victories last time out domestically.

With such a similar run of form, and neither outfit having looked clinical in recent weeks, a sharing of the spoils to occur at the Madejski Stadium is available at a promising 23/10.

Huddersfield to down Leeds and both score

In one of the many 3pm kick-offs taking place on Saturday, David Wagner’s league leaders Huddersfield will look to extend their gap at the Championship’s summit when contesting a stuttering Leeds United side.

Garry Monk’s Whites lost the previous meeting with their opponents 4-1 in March and have had both teams score in their last nine home matches. The visiting Terriers are therefore 17/4 to earn an away triumph with both teams getting on the scoresheet at Elland Road.

Norwich’s Jerome to strike anytime

This fixture between Norwich City and Cardiff City has produced plenty of goals in recent years, with a combined 14 strikes having been converted in the previous three match-ups.

Canaries frontman Cameron Jerome was on target in both of Norwich’s fixture wins last season and the 30-year-old forward is a tasty 11/8 to add another goal anytime this weekend.

Magpies’ Murphy to find the target

Fresh off the back of scoring his first ever international goal for the Republic of Ireland, Daryl Murphy will be full of confidence and momentum, and the towering Newcastle striker is 5/2 to open his Toon account against Derby County.

The Waterford-born targetman netted a late equaliser to help his nation secure a World Cup qualifying draw with Serbia on their travels, and he is set to arrive back for club duties on a high for this Saturday evening outing against the Rams at Pride Park.

Villa to down Forest without conceding

On to Sunday’s afternoon match-up and it’s a fascinating face-off between Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, with the hosts hoping to recover from a disappointing start to life in the Championship, after their Premier League relegation last term.

The Villans should hold plenty of confidence for their latest domestic outing, though, having not lost to their next opponents since 1994, and Roberto Di Matteo’s men are 2/1 to earn home superiority without conceding here.
