Coral football ambassador Alan Shearer is also a huge fan of golf. So, ahead of the 2016 Ryder Cup, our own Simon Clare sat down with the Premier League legend to get his exclusive thoughts as Europe prepare to battle the USA in this prestigious team event.

“It’s great to see Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Thomas Pieters be Darren Clarke’s wildcard picks,” said Shearer, who added he will be glued to his sofa between September 30 and October 2 watching as much of the Ryder Cup action as he can.

Having witnessed Danny Willett’s US Masters triumph firsthand earlier in the golf season, Shearer feels the British rookie Major winner will relish the prospect of the Ryder Cup, which is being held at Hazeltine National on the outskirts Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“I think he’ll love the pressure and the atmosphere,” Shearer continued. “He’s very spiky. He’ll want to go over to America and prove a point, as will the rest of the European team.”

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer played his entire career at the top level of English football, winning the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1994-95. The following summer he signed for his hometown club, Newcastle United, for a then world record £15 million fee.

He ended his playing career with a record 260 Premier League goals, which still stands today. He also won 63 caps for England, including 34 as captain, and among his 30 international goals were five scored at Euro 96, a total that won him the Golden Boot at that tournament.

Now the chief pundit on Match Of The Day, Alan was one of the first two players inducted into the Premier League Hall Of Fame this year.
