Best goals across the globe from August 20-21

Coral present Weekend Worldies – where we’ve compiled some of the greatest goals across the globe from August 20th-21st, just for your viewing pleasure.

So, scroll down to see top wonderstrikes from the Olympics, Premier League, La Liga and Ligue 1

Lionel Messi v Real Betis

We start off with the current Ballon d’Or winner Messi, and the awesome Argentine certainly seems to have got over his nation’s final loss in the 2016 Copa America, as he bagged a brace in a 6-2 win as Barcelona kicked off their league defence.

The pick of the goals was undoubtedly Messi’s first to put Barca 2-1 up, as he whipped his shot past the keeper from outside the area.

Sami Khedira v Fiorentina

Another global name features in this week’s pick of the goals, as Germany international Khedira fired in a bullet header to put Juventus 1-0 up in their opening match of the season.

Juve ended up winning 2-1, thanks to new signing Gonzalo Higuain’s late goal.

Kevin Mirallas v West Bromwich Albion

Mirallas started and finished off a brilliant team move just before the half-time whistle to give Everton an equaliser.

It proved to be crucial, as the Toffees ended up winning their first match of the 2016/17 Premier League season after drawing with Tottenham the previous week.

Etienne Capoue v Chelsea

Old Italian foes Walter Mazzarri and Antonio Conte locked horns again with new teams Watford and Chelsea respectively, and it was the former who looked as though he’d get one over the latter with just 10 minutes to go.

The Hornets certainly looked on top at the time, and Capoue’s smashing strike in the 55th minute gave them what they deserved, until two late goals saw the Blues take away all three points.

Sam Vokes v Liverpool

It’s difficult to believe that Wales striker Vokes only has one Premier League goal to his name, but what a strike and how important it was as he opened the scoring against Liverpool after just two minutes.

His Burnley team went on to shock the Reds 2-0, to give them a crucial win early in the season to settle their nerves a bit on their return to the top-flight.

Neymar v Germany

After suffering heartbreak on home soil at the 2014 World Cup, and with the Samba Boys flopping at the recent Copa America, Neymar finally gave Brazil fans something to cheer about after helping them to Olympic Gold glory.

The Barcelona forward rounded off the penalty shootout by converting the winning spot-kick, thus gaining revenge over Germany who thrashed them 7-1 at the World Cup, but not before scoring the below wonder free-kick in normal time…

Cristhian Stuani v Sunderland

Middlesbrough continued to live up to their promise, after an exciting and productive transfer window so far, as they downed Northeast rivals Sunderland 2-1 away.

Stuani got both goals for Premier League new boys Boro, and his first was from right out of the top drawer as he smashed home from well outside the box.

Florian Thauvin v Guingamp

Newcastle United-owned Thauvin’s goal against Guingamp was worthy of winning any game, but unfortunately for him it came too late as his Marseille team were already 2-0 down.

His strike could not inspire a comeback, and L’OM are still winless in Ligue 1 this season after two games.

Marco Asensio v Real Sociedad

Real Madrid begun the La Liga season in style by beating their Basque hosts 3-0, thanks to a brace from Gareth Bale.

However, it was young Spaniard Asensio who stole the headlines after his goal before half-time to put Los Blancos 2-0 up. His first touch and delightful chip over the keeper showed that he could be a future star.
