Golds in disciplines as varied as cycling, golf, tennis and athletics have put Team GB into second place in the medal table behind the USA and marginally ahead of China. Here are some of the highlights…
Golf: Rose bowls over Stenson after epic final round
Justin Rose added another Gold to Britain’s collection these Olympics after edging 2016 Open Championship winner Henrik Stenson. It went down to the wire as the duo were level going into the final hole, but 2013 US Open champion Rose held his nerve to play the perfect chip onto the green and triumph by two shots (-16).
He is Britain’s first ever Olympic golf winner, and is the first champion since the sport was last played in this event 112 years ago.
Tennis: Murray retains title
Andy Murray completed a successful defence of the men’s singles at the Olympics with a four-set victory over resurgent Argentine racket star Juan Martin Del Potro. It is the second major tennis crown of the season for Team GB’s Murray following his Wimbledon triumph.
Heptathlon: Ennis-Hill scoops Silver behind surprise package Thiam
Jessica Ennis-Hill was not as lucky as Murray, however, as she came up just short in the Heptathlon. After two days and seven gruelling events of track and field competition, virtually unknown Belgian youngster Nafissatou Thiam grabbed Gold after setting five personal bests.
Glasgow Commonwealth Games winner Brianne Theisen-Eaton came third, while Team GB’s other entry Katarina Johnson-Thompson was down in sixth after disappointing with her throwing in shot put and javelin.
Men’s 10,000m: Fantastic Farah reigns in Rio despite fall
There is simply no stopping the long distance running force that is Mo Farah. Even when he was clipped and fell on the track in Rio, he still picked himself up to retain his 10,000m Olympics crown. Will he go for another double with the 5,000m?
Men’s 100m: Bolt gets better of Gatlin again
Usain Bolt is the fastest man alive and is still to be beaten at the Olympics as he took the men’s 100m in 9.81 seconds ahead of American rival and drug cheat Justin Gatlin. Canada’s Andre De Grasse ran a personal best of 9.91 to bag Bronze.
Can Jamaican icon Bolt complete a third individual Olympics double and even treble, including the 4x100m relay? We’ll find out soon enough!
Van Niekerk sets new Men’s 400m world record
Perhaps the most imperious display on the track, however, came from South Africa’s Wayde Van Niekerk, who eclipsed Michael Johnson’s 17-year world record in the men’s 400m.
Romping round one lap of the track in an unparalleled time of 43.03 seconds, Van Niekerk blew defending Olympics champion Kirani James completely out the water. LaShawn Merritt, another American who has served a drugs ban and is doubling up and competing in the 200m, took bronze.

Foxes tamed by Tigers as title defence begins
Managerless Hull City have made no summer signings, yet this so-called club in crisis stunned reigning Premier League champions Leicester City.
Although that double bicycle kick opener was cancelled out by Riyad Mahrez’s penalty, Robert Snodgrass grabbed the winner at the KC Stadium.
Own-goal gives Guardiola winning Man City debut
Pep Guardiola got off to a winning start as Manchester City manager thanks to Paddy McNair’s own-goal in a debut off the Sunderland bench to forget for the former Manchester United man. Sergio Aguero opened the scoring from the spot only for Jermain Defoe to reply for the Black Cats at the Etihad.
If former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss Guardiola thought Premier League life would be easy, then he’ll have to think again. Black Cats counterpart David Moyes also has an enormous task ahead of him on Wearside to avoid yet more relegation struggles.
Ibrahimovic on target again as Man Utd better Bournemouth
Paul Pogba may have been suspended, but the Red Devils still managed to win handsomely down on the south coast. Juan Mata – a player whose Old Trafford future under Jose Mourinho has been questioned – got them on their way to a 3-1 victory at Bournemouth.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Swedish superstar signed for free, scored the pick of the goals with a low, long-range drive. Man Utd captain Wayne Rooney also netted, with Cherries full back Adam Smith grabbing a consolation.
Liverpool edge seven-goal thriller at Arsenal
The best Premier League game of the weekend was saved until last. Breathless at times and so open throughout that both defences were gaping, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool came from behind to score four at the Emirates and were almost held by an Arsenal comeback.
While the Gunners went ahead through Theo Walcott, who moments earlier saw a penalty saved, Arsene Wenger’s lack of senior defenders came back to bite him.
Philippe Coutinho (twice), Adam Lallana and debutant Sadio Mane all found the net, with the turnaround effected either side of half-time and then the Reds’ two-goal lead established just after the hour mark.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Calum Chambers, like Walcott graduates of the Southampton academy subsequently snapped up by Arsenal, netted too to give the hosts hope of an unlikely point.
Klopp’s crew hung on, however, and Wenger cannot afford to be deaf to the chorus of boos that rang around the Emirates at the final whistle.
