Spurs a threat to Toffees on Premier League opening weekend

After a long summer which saw Portugal crowned as new European Championship winners, top-flight action is set to return this upcoming Premier League opening weekend for what looks likely of being an enthralling 2016/17 campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur training session - AAMI Park

The 20 top-flight clubs to contest this term have been busy in both pre-season preparations and the summer transfer window, but it’s London outfit Tottenham that have looked razor sharp in recent weeks ahead of their opening clash with Everton.

In contrast to Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs, who smashed San Siro giants Inter Milan 6-1 in a recent friendly encounter, Everton look far from ready for the new campaign at Goodison Park.

Ronald Koeman has arrived on the scene, but the Toffees are yet to substantially strengthen in any department this summer, and they could potentially be set to feel the full force of an in-form Tottenham this weekend.

Slick Spurs to tame Toffees

Pochettino’s men haplessly finished third last term, with a late capitulation seeing them let their previously strong second position slip into the hands of bitter city rivals Arsenal, but they are 7/4 with Coral to win a major trophy this season.

On Norwegian soil, the capital club rediscovered their clinical eye for goal against the Nerazzurri, now under the guidance of Dutchman Frank de Boer, comfortably dispatching six goals at Ullevaal Stadion.

On the back of that impressive warm-up success, as well as an earlier 2-1 summer win over Nottingham Forest, Tottenham will enter their first league game of the campaign at 7/5 to overcome Everton.

The Merseyside club have signed Maarten Stekelenburg from Fulham for free, as well as Bassala Sambou, Chris Renshaw and Idrissa Gueye from Aston Villa, but a lack of big names will frustrate and possibly worry the Goodison Park faithful.

Everton will take to their maiden PL game under Koeman at 19/10 to triumph on home soil, though Tottenham, after flexing their attacking muscles in pre-season of late, are a very promising 5/1 to fire in three or more goals in their opener.

Kane to pick up where he left off?

Argentine boss Pochettino has boosted his attack and midfield so far this summer with the encouraging respective captures of Vincent Janssen from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar and Victor Wanyama from his former club Southampton.

The Spurs tactician may delve into the transfer window again before it slams shut on August 31st, but his current crop showcased their credentials in that earlier thrashing of a helpless Inter Milan.

Their star striker Harry Kane has been scoring goals for fun for two seasons now and put his Euro 2016 disappointments with England behind him in pre-season, bagging a brace in that 6-1 friendly victory.

Janssen off the mark and ready for PL

The Spurs sharpshooter opened proceedings after just five minutes from the penalty spot, then added another in the second-half, while midfielder Dele Alli struck the third and new frontman Janssen managed to get off the mark too.

Kane will take to Goodison Park this Saturday afternoon at 9/2 to once again open proceedings on the blue half of Merseyside, having netted 32 times across all competitions for club and country last term.

His new strike partner Janssen arrives in London with a huge reputation too, after clinically firing in 30 goals on all fronts last season, and the 22-year-old finisher is 5/4 to get on the scoresheet anytime against the Toffees.

The five-cap Netherlands international was awarded the Johan Cruyff Trophy earlier this year for his AZ heroics, with such an honour being given to the Dutch talent of the year.

Former winners have include Janssen’s new teammate Christian Eriksen, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben, and Spurs will hope their latest acquisition can follow in the footsteps of some of those illustrious names at White Hart Lane, beginning with Everton this weekend.
