Luke Morris really fancies his ride at Newmarket this Saturday

It was a little frustrating at Glorious Goodwood last week but we were delighted with how Marsha ran when she was just beaten in the King George Stakes last Friday.

She ran a cracking race to be beaten just three quarters of a length by some of the best sprinters around and showed us that she is more than up to winning at that level.

At the same time I was a bit disappointed as I thought she could have won. Little margins make such a big difference in those top sprints and hopefully she’ll get a bit more luck next time and I’m sure there’s big days in her.

I think the plan is to go for the Flying Five at the Curragh on Irish Champions Weekend and she should have a big chance there.

Looking at this weekend, I’ve got rides at Haydock and Newmarket and will be catching a plane after my last ride at Haydock to get back to Newmarket, where I think I’ve got a big chance of a winner in the last.

I’m missing the two big races of the day and in the Rose of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock I think Foundation (3.45) is the one to side with.

It looks like a race where a lot of the horses are on recovery missions. Arab Spring has been off for a year and a half, but had looked top class before then. Royal Artillery and Foundation looked like they had the potential to go right to the top at the start of the year. I think Foundation’s a horse who could use this race to get back on the right track.

At Newmarket, the Sweet Solera Stakes (3.15) is the main race and Grecian Light is the one that caught my eye. Actually, I think both of the Godolphin horses looked very useful on their debuts and with James Doyle opting to ride Grecian Light she must be held in high regard.

She’ll need to step up to beat on her toes but I think she can and trainer Charlie Appleby has had his horses in great form this year.

2.00 Haydock – Archie
He’s been in good form and his trainer Clive Cox has his horses in good order at the moment as well. However, this horse does look in the grip of the handicapper and it might be tough for him to get his head in front until he gets a few pounds off his back.

She’s had a fantastic year and has just kept improving. She’s surprised myself and my boss Sir Mark Prescott a bit with the amount she’s improved. She’s now a Listed winner and has to carry a penalty in this race so will need to step up again. Being drawn wide in stall 14 isn’t ideal either, but it was the same when she won at Ascot last time. On this season she’s probably the best horse in the race and if she’s still improving then she has a big chance hopefully.

5.30 Newmarket – St Michel
Last time we dropped back in trip from two miles to a mile and six furlongs and we were forced to make our own running. That didn’t really suit and there looks to be a couple in this race that like to make the running so we can take a lead this time. Having something to aim at going back up in trip against older horses I think he’ll take all the beating. He’s my best ride of the day.
