Jamie Spencer looking for more success on Day Two at York

I ride Queen Kindly, the Frankel filly, for Richard Fahey in the 2.30, the Lowther. I’m really looking forward to getting her back on fast ground. She’s a speedy filly and this flat six furlongs will suit her. It’s a very open race bar Fair Eva who will start a warm favourite. Richard is very happy with her so I’m looking forward to this race. Obviously Fair Eva, another Frankel filly, is the one to beat but we’ll give it a go.
Frankel is having an amazing start as a sire so far. You can see that it’s already being reflected in the sales ring this week. At the first yearling sales in Deauville they are going crazy for him, and at Saratoga last week one yearling went for $500,000 and the guy couldn’t believe that he’d got it. It’s an exciting time for Frankel. It’s like turning wheels with Frankel being a son of Galileo. The thing is he’s having success with horses over 5f and 6f, short distances, when Frankel himself only made his debut on 13th August. So the fact that he’s able to get speedy two year olds just shows you what a sire he is proving to be. It was very similar with Galileo as one of his offspring won the Albany, a Jim Bolger horse, from his first crop. When that happens you know they’re going to be a success as a stallion. We can now look forward to the later developing Frankel two year olds in the Autumn, as they may be even better. It’s exciting times for the stallion and it’s good for Racing as it tickles the imagination.
In the 3.40, the Yorkshire Oaks, I ride Koora. She’s in good form after bombing out in Ireland. She ran really well first time out finishing second in the Middleton. Then she went to Ireland last time and was never comfortable, never going. Luca’s given her a break, got her back. I’ve ridden her in her last two pieces of work and she’s absolutely flying. I’d fancy her to finish in the first three but I do have a slight reservation about the ground, particularly if it got lightning fast. So we’ll just have to see how it’s riding. Physically and preparation-wise she couldn’t be better. She’s in great form.
I’m then on Tiptree in the 4.10 for the same trainer. She ran well at Newmarket last time and Luca has a great record in this race. She goes there with a definite chance. It’s a very open race. She looked like being one to follow at the back end of last season when she won her maiden at Newmarket. She didn’t show up on her first run this term but then got back on track. So we’ll see how she goes.
My last ride is on Dutch Mist in the 4.55. She got back on track when she won her second last start and then went to Pontefract and was coming home very strongly and only just got beat. I’m sure the quick seven furlongs will suit her. I won on her around Catterick last year and a sharp track suited her there so this test is perfect for her. She’s improved for headgear so she’ll go there with a bit of a squeak.
The season is going well. Obviously I got that three day ban, missing the Shergar Cup, but that was the first ban I’ve had all year thankfully. There’s plenty of racing left. Next weekend I go to Japan to ride in the Jockeys’ Challenge. So I’m really looking forward to that. I always then find that when the Sales season starts properly in September every week just seems to turn into a day, they just fly by.
