Glorious Goodwood may be done and dusted for another year, but Coral are reliving all the major action from this elite flat horse racing with a weekend in pictures special…

Tuesday

Day one of this prestigious meeting contained back-to-back Group 2 races, so who won them and how?

War Decree sets tone for O’Brien and Moore with Vintage display

War_Decree

Top Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore wasted no time in getting Glorious Goodwood off to a winning start in the Vintage Stakes, saddling and riding favourite War Decree to a one-and-three-quarter lengths result over Thunder Snow.

Hills makes most of Dutch Connection in Lennox Stakes

Dutch_Connection

Hugo Palmer duo Home Of The Brave and Gifted Master couldn’t contend with Charlie Hills’ Dutch Connection, who scored the Lennox Stakes by the same margin as War Decree above.

Wednesday

The Gurkha v Galileo Gold in the Sussex Stakes was the heavyweight clash everyone expected on the second day of Glorious Goodwood…

Ulysses poetry in motion in Gordon Stakes

Glorious Goodwood day 2

Before the big battle, Sir Michael Stoute’s Ulysses landed the Group 3 Gordon Stakes with a half-a-length victory over The Major General.

The Gurkha gets better of Sussex Stakes rival Galileo Gold

Glorious Goodwood day 2

O’Brien and Moore have been dominating the Group 1 races this season, and The Gurkha just beat thoroughbred relative Galileo Gold by a neck in a sensational renewal of the Sussex Stakes.

Yalta makes all in Molecomb Stakes success

Glorious Goodwood day 2

Three lengths is a huge margin of victory in a 5f sprint, but that’s what Mark Johnston’s Yalta managed, making all in the Molecomb Stakes ahead of stablemate The Last Lion and pre-race favourite Global Applause.

Thursday

Let’s not forget the Goodwood Cup has been competed for since 1812, over 200 years of history packed into one race over 2m. Day three of the Glorious meeting had the Richmond Stakes and Lillie Langtry Stakes contested either side of this centrepiece…

Mehmas hangs on in Richmond Stakes for handler Hannon

Glorious Goodwood day 3

Trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Frankie Dettori proved a winning combination in Newmarket’s July Stakes, and the two-year-old followed up to scoop the Group 2 Richmond Stakes, which is open to colts and fillies, by a neck from Charlie Appleby’s Blue Point.

Big Orange retains Goodwood Cup under Spencer

Glorious Goodwood day 3

Coral horse racing ambassador Jamie Spencer rode Big Orange to back-to-back successes of Thursday’s big race, the Group 2 Goodwood Cup. As part of the British Champions Series, we’ll see them paired together again all being well at Ascot come the end of the flat season.

Gosden lands Lillie Langtry with California

California

John Gosden filly California stayed on well for Group 3 glory in the Lillie Langtry Stakes, open to female horses.

Friday

The penultimate day saw the King George Stakes take centre stage and the old Golden Mile got Goodwood punters’ pulses racing, but not before the Glorious Stakes…

Kings Fete makes a Glorious run

Glorious Goodwood day 4

That race got day four underway, and Stoute gelding Kings Fete justified his tag as favourite with a three-quarters of a length success over Ayrad from Roger Charlton’s stable in this Group 3 contest. Moore’s big race saddle success, which was a feature of this meeting, would continue…

Franklin D walks a Golden Mile

Glorious Goodwood day 4

Hot favourite Franklin D got up to win the Mile race, sponsored by Betfred, by a head from David Elsworth’s Master The World to give Moore another victory.

Take Cover captures King George crown

Take_Cover

A nine-year-old winning a 5f sprint? No, it’s not a misprint. David Griffiths gelding Take Cover made all to deny Washington Dc by a neck, who in turn only just hung on to second with Moore on board by a head from Goldream.

Saturday

Glorious Goodwood was rounded off with O’Brien star attraction Minding in the Nassau Stakes, but the big betting race was the Stewards’ Cup…

Minding nets Nassau Stakes for sixth Group 1 success

Glorious Goodwood day 5

Is there a better filly in training at the moment? Almost certainly not, as Minding came through the few females who dared oppose her to land a sixth Group 1 race with a one-and-a-quarter lengths victory over Queen’s Trust.

Dancing Star illuminates Stewards’ Cup

Glorious Goodwood day 5

Minding is some act to follow, but Andrew Balding filly Dancing Star put in a commanding performance to beat the fancied Orion’s Bow and capture the Stewards’ Cup.

This Heritage Handicap, like the Nassau Stakes, has been run since 1840 and it is only fitting that such traditions help to bring the curtain down on another Glorious Festival at Goodwood.
