Premier League new boys Burnley could be forgiven for gulping at the thought of facing Liverpool, after the Reds racked up four against Arsenal last time out. That fluid front three of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane is formidable, with an away rout looking likely.
Watford v Chelsea: Away win
Antonio Conte’s infectious enthusiasm has already taken hold at Stamford Bridge, and the Blues should be buoyed after beating West Ham United. The Hornets forced draws last term, but Chelsea success could be on the cards here after both Eden Hazard and Diego Costa looked revived in London.
West Brom v Everton: Away win
Everton still have creases to iron out but were impressive in the first 45 of their opening Premier League outing and they have enough to beat the Baggies at home again, as they did last season.
Tottenham v Crystal Palace: Home win
Spurs should snatch their first victory of the season on home soil at White Hart Lane, with Palace looking blunt up top and the hosts full of attacking verve. New striker signing Vincent Janssen caught the eye in his Tottenham debut cameo and may expect more minutes to test the Eagles defence.
Birmingham v Wolves: Draw
Spoils have been split in two of the past four meetings between these West Midlands rivals, and there is little to chose between the Championship pair currently. With one victory and a duo of draws apiece, Birmingham and Wolves are well matched to end evenly again.
Bristol City v Newcastle: Draw
Rafa Benitez’s Magpies have had a tough start to life in the second tier, and must start picking up points. With the Robins having been stalled last time out thanks to Norwich City a draw could be a shout as both try to recover after two fixtures in just a few days.
Millwall v Sheff Utd: Home win
The hosting Lions are still licking their wounds after defeat by Peterborough but face the perfect opponents to bounce back against, as they beat the Blades twice last term and the Sheffield club are winless in the current League One campaign.
Hearts v Inverness CT: Draw
Last time the Jambos and Inverness jostled it resulted in a draw and, as both are currently in the midst of poor runs, each without a Scottish Premiership win yet, it is tough to spot a potential victor. Instead, a splitting of points looks value.
Leicester v Arsenal: Home win
At the King Power, the Foxes are a different team when backed by passionate home fans and can pinch the points against injury-riddled Arsenal. If the Gunners go forward, as shown versus Liverpool, Leicester’s counter attack could find much joy.
Derby v Aston Villa: Draw
Both Championship sides have had a mixed bag of results so far, and a point apiece looks a likely outcome at Pride Park, where the Rams are yet to really get going.
Ipswich v Norwich: Away win
The East Anglia derby is always exciting but Norwich can win the first of two this term after their relegation back to the Championship. Unbeaten in the season so far, the Canaries can further soar after losing none of their past six against the Tractor Boys.
Sunderland v Middlesbrough: Draw
Speaking of derbies, the Premier League can enjoy a Tees–Wear tussle this weekend, but a draw may be the best bet to back as the two teams are still bedding in a host of new players, with this a challenging second outing for both.
Guingamp v Marseille: Draw
In Ligue 1, Guingamp managed to hold Principality club Monaco to a 2-2 draw in their first match of the French season, and can do the same to Marseille, against whom they dropped only two points from six last term.
West Ham v Bournemouth: Home win
The first Premier League home game in the Olympic Stadium for West Ham will be a big occasion, so back them to beat Bournemouth, who have a long way to travel. There is pride as well as points at stake for the Hammers here and they possess the quality for victory.
Real Sociedad v Real Madrid: Away win
La Liga’s new season kicks off for Real Madrid with a rumble against Basque side Sociedad, and Los Blancos should have more than enough in the tank to triumph after a competitive pre-season.
