Andy Murray is the evens favourite with leading bookmaker Coral to be crowned the 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year following ‘Sensational Sunday’ where Great Britain won six gold medals at the Olympics in Rio on a historical evening.

Murray is odds-on with Coral at 10-11 to be knighted in the New Year’s Honours list which will be revealed in December, while the Scotsman will be bidding for his second Grand Slam of 2016 when he competes in the US Open later this month where the British number one is 2-1 to prevail in New York for the second time in his career.

Mo Farah became the first British athlete to win three gold medals in track and field on Saturday evening and the 10,000m Olympic champion is now second best at 7-2 in the betting for the 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Max Whitlock also made history yesterday by winning Britain’s first gymnastic gold at an Olympics after which he was cut to 5-1 for SPOTY later this year, while Jason Kenny is 9-1 to seal the award following his success in the men’s sprint in track cycling.

“With Great Britain having so much success at the Olympics so far, you could really make a case for five or six at this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards evening, however, after his second Olympic gold medal last night and his victory at Wimbledon earlier this year, Andy Murray is the warm favourite to win the award for the third time in his career,” said Coral’s John Hill.

“The betting suggests Murray will also be rewarded with a knighthood last this year as he is odds-on to be named on the New Year’s Honours list,” added Hill.
