Gunners go back in for Lacazette, interested in defensive duo?

In the fast-paced environment that is the summer transfer window, gossip on what could happen can vary.

Yesterday, we brought you reports that Arsene Wenger was prepared to shelve his interest in Lyon marksman Alexandre Lacazette, yet the Saturday press claim Arsenal will make an improved £35m bid to snap up the striker.

The Gunners will simultaneously look to Spain and Italy to strengthen their defence, following news that former Germany centre back Per Mertesacker is to miss the start of the Premier League season through injury.

Germany vs. Italy

Mertesacker’s compatriot Shkodran Mustafi, 24, of Valencia is the man Arsenal are thought to be in talks with over a move from the Mestalla to the Emirates to plug this defensive gap.

Holding a rumoured £42.1m release clause in his contract with Los Che, it is understood Mustafi – once on Everton’s books – could be available for a fee smaller than that.

Brazilian full back Bruno Peres of Torino, meanwhile, is another option the Gunners are looking at bringing into their ranks.

Wenger has a plethora of right-sided defenders in his squad already; so, with the Turin team wanting almost £17m for 26-year-old Peres’ services, this may be one rumour to take with a pinch of salt.

Eriksen remains in Tottenham talks over new contract

Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton - Barclays Premier League - White Hart Lane

Spurs’ Denmark international star Christian Eriksen has rejected a new deal, but remains in negotiations to remain at White Hart Lane.

Classy ex-Ajax attacking midfielder Eriksen, 24, is reportedly after a significant pay rise from his rumoured £30k-per-week pay packet.

Under contract at Tottenham until the summer of 2018, there is plenty of time for talks to continue. Eriksen is a key player for Mauricio Pochettino and is believed to seek a deal that will make the Dane one of the club’s top earners.

Hammers bid for Hull’s Robertson knocked back

Derby County v Hull City - Sky Bet Championship - Play Off - First Leg - iPro Stadium

And finally, staying in the capital, West Ham United have had a reported £7m bid for Scotland left back Andrew Robertson turned down by current employers Hull City.

Slaven Bilic is in the market to bring in cover for Aaron Cresswell, who sustained a knee injury during pre-season, with the Hammers attempting to take advantage of the uncertainty on Humberside.

The Tigers have shelved takeover talks until the autumn, but manager Steve Bruce quit the KC Stadium despite achieving a second Premier League promotion with this team last term.
