Serena shows strength and quality
WTA world number one Serena Williams is now odds-on at 8/11 with Coral to defend her Wimbledon women’s singles title after an impressive and flawless second set display in her round four fixture.
Edging Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5 in the opener, all-time Grand Slam great Williams then sealed victory to love. It is last eight opponents and fourth and fifth seeds Angelique Kerber (6/1) and Simona Halep (7/1), meanwhile, that are reckoned most likely to challenge Serena.
What are the best bets of the ladies’ quarter-finals? Our tennis tipsters take a look…
Williams wins Pavlyuchenkova second set 6-1
Given how impressive Serena was against Kuznetsova, backing her to put together a similarly strong second set display against another Russian, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, makes sense.
The head-to-head history between Williams and her latest opponent supports this too, with three of the last four meetings resulting in Serena sealing victory 6-1.
Nifty 9/2 odds are available on that being the precise scoreline once again, and Williams look well worth a wager to repeat wrapping up the second set thus.
Vesnina to win Cibulkova clash in three sets
Unseeded Elena Vesnina has won the only meeting in six head-to-heads against Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia on grass.
Every time the Russian has triumphed, it has been in three sets and, if Vesnina is to eliminate her fellow impressive Eastern European, then it is probably going to go all the way.
At 2/1 for victory and double that price for a 2-1 win, Vesnina has all the attributes to pull off another upset.
Kerber and Halep goes the distance
With so little to choose between Australian Open champion Kerber and consistent WTA World Tour performer Simona Halep, this has all the makings of a classic quarter-final clash.
Half of their four previous battles have gone to a third set, with Romanian racket star Halep winning both.
With Kerber returning to her earlier season form, however, an outright winner is too close to call, making over 2.5 sets in this match at 6/5 a much safer bet.
Venus to stop Shvedova in straight sets
Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova has been on an incredible run at Wimbledon, reaching her first singles quarter-final at the grass Grand Slam.
Now she meets veteran Venus Williams, who has been enjoying something of a renaissance in SW19.
At 6/4 to win in straight sets, siding with the elder Williams sibling with all her big match experience could well pay off.
