Serena set to tie Steffi Graf

Australian Open - Day 13 - Melbourne Park

WTA world number one Serena Williams has reached all three Grand Slam finals this year so far, but came up short in the first two – including against Angelique Kerber at the start of the season at the Australian Open.

Punters who feel that defeat in Melbourne was significant will want to get all over the 5/2 Coral offer on Germany’s fourth seed Kerber repeating victory at Wimbledon, but she was anything but convincing in the SW19 semis last time out.

Sensational Serena crushed Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-0 dropping just three points on her own serve, while Kerber repeatedly dropped serve to elder Williams sibling Venus during a less comfortable 6-4 6-4 result.

What motivates Serena is simple. Win Wimbledon, which she is an odds-on 3/10 price to do, and she will go level with Steffi Graf’s Open Era record of 22 individual women’s Grand Slam titles.

Slow starts should be punished

Williams tended to take a while to get going in her earlier rounds matches, but has been clinical during the quarters and semis, dropping just 10 games across the two matches.

Kerber’s repeat loss of serve against Venus, despite Serena’s big sister doing likewise, remains a concern for anyone backing the German, but if she to defeat another Williams again in the final, then it is likely to be in three sets.

Odds of 5/1 say Kerber can record a 2-1 victory as she did Down Under over Serena, but she will need to start well at the All England Club. A 6/4 price, meanwhile, is available for their latest battle to go over 2.5 sets.

Williams and Wimbledon go well together

This is Serena’s ninth singles final at Wimbledon and she’s won six of the eight played – a success rate of 75 per cent. Four of her half dozen victories have come in straight sets, so Williams is better at 5/6 than her outright price for a 2-0 result.

Grass courts just seem to suit Serena and her approach to tennis superbly, not that she’s a slouch on other surfaces either. With every incentive to try and match Graf, plus avenging that Aussie Open loss, Williams will surely grab further Grand Slam glory.

One final price to consider is the 4/11 on offer for Serena to win the second set – something she has always done in all previous seven clashes with Kerber.

Coral’s top tip: A flutter on the 5/6 for Serena Williams to win a seventh Wimbledon women’s title in straight sets over Kerber must be considered.
