Highest scoring country shouts for Euro 2016

Football fans are counting the days until Euro 2016 finally kicks off this summer and, with little time now to wait for the showcase event in France, the excitement is rapidly growing.

Ahead of the awaited opener between hosts France and Romania, Coral look at which nation could potentially finish the illustrious tournament with the most goals scored, with fans expecting to see an abundance of top strikes in the coming weeks…

Can anyone outscore Germany?

Germany take to the Euros as the reigning world champions, after their dominant performances in Brazil two years ago when they marched to victory, famously smashing the South American hosts 7-1 along the way.

Joachim Low’s latest Die Mannschaft crop look like another force to be reckoned with, despite being without now-retired all-time World Cup marksman Miroslav Klose. Though they possess an abundance of attacking stars that could fire them to victory and top of the overall scoring charts.

With rampant Bayern Munich marksman Thomas Muller set to lead their line, alongside Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil and Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos among others, Germany are the 5/2 favourites with Coral to finish as the most clinical country in France.

The Germans are also the highest scoring nation in European Championship history, though have conceded the most ever too, and will take some stopping going forward. So who can outscore them this summer?

France Cameroon Soccer

Didier Deschamps’ hosts France are seen as 3/1 second-favourites to fire in the most goals on home soil, and are definitely worth a punt with the likes of Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann, Manchester United starlet Anthony Martial and Juventus midfield ace Paul Pogba all set to star for Les Bleus.

Holders Spain could return to prominence

After suffering a hapless World Cup campaign in Brazil, Spain will look to reinstate their international supremacy this summer as they enter as the reigning champions, having ousted Italy in the Euro 2012 final.

The holders, guided by experienced tactician Vicente del Bosque, are 11/2 to end as the most prolific team in France, with the Spaniards’ 4-0 win over Italy four years ago seeing them boast the highest amount ever scored in a European Championship final.

On their way to what was their third straight major international honour in 2012, following Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup success, La Roja notched up the most goals in Poland and Ukraine, with former marksman Fernando Torres leading the scoring charts.

Germany were a close second that year, ahead of Italy and Portugal, who are both 16/1 to rack up the most strikes in France this summer, with Real Madrid hitman Cristiano Ronaldo set to star for the latter after recently securing another Champions League medal with his club.

Outside contenders

As well as the big guns for Euro 2016, there are many others possessing enough attacking firepower to rally to the top of the goal standings, including Marc Wilmots’ talented Belgium side, who are 11/1 achieve this feat.

The Red Devils boast the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Marouane Fellaini, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne in their forward ranks, players that are more than capable of finding the target on the big stage, though their Group E rivals Sweden are also an outside shout.

Montenegro Sweden Euro Soccer

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will lead the line for the Swedes and, after finishing just second behind Poland’s Robert Lewandowski in the qualifying scorer standings, he could flourish again in a country he took by storm for PSG. They are 100/1 to finish the top scoring nation.

Meanwhile, Croatia are tipped by some to be dark horses for this summer’s tournament as they boast a wealth of midfield talent. This includes Real’s Luka Modric and Barcelona star Ivan Rakitic, while experienced frontman Mario Mandzukic could shine too for a country that is 33/1 to finish the most prolific.

Of course, England look like a threat on paper, with skipper Wayne Rooney among several in-form forwards, including his teenage Man Utd teammate Marcus Rashford, and the Three Lions are seen at 11/1 to end the campaign as top scorers.
