Abdon can strike for Stoute in Tercentenary Stakes

Abdon shaped with bags of promise when runner-up on seasonal reappearance and can go one better to land the Group 3 Tercentenary Stakes on day three of Royal Ascot (15.05).

The Sir Michael Stoute trained colt looked a smart prospect and one to keep onside when winning on his sole start as a juvenile, overcoming a slow start and greenness to land a 10-runner maiden on soft ground by 1/2 a length.

That view was confirmed when Abdon chased home Hawkbill in a Listed contest at Newmarket on return to action.

After being held-up, the three-year-old made good headway on the outside two from home and stuck to the task well to be beaten just over a length without being unduly knocked about.

Yard knows what’s required to win race

It was an effort which suggested there was much better to come, and Abdon is sure to strip fitter for the outing.

The son of Cacique will also have no problems with underfoot conditions, and hails from a yard that knows what is required to win the 1m 2f contest.

Stoute saddled Glass Harmonium and Cannock Chase to land spoils in 2009 and 2014 respectively, and Abdon has a similar profile to that duo and can provide the Newmarket handler with a third winner of the race.

Steel Of Madrid has more to offer

Blue De Vega has some top class form to his name but faces a tough task giving 4lb to all his rivals, and the improving Steel Of Madrid looks the one most likely to give Abdon most to think about.

Richard Hannon

The Richard Hannon trained colt shaped really well when runner-up in a strong handicap at Haydock before landing a Listed contest at Kempton when last seen in action.

Steel Of Madrid ran on strongly to beat Linguistic by 1 1/2 lengths, and the runner-up is a highly regarded sort who had previously won a valuable sales race at Newmarket in impressive fashion before being beaten just a short-head in a Listed contest at Chester.

That represents solid form, and the manner of the victory suggested Steel Of Madrid was on an upward curve and should have more to offer.

Coral’s top tip: The lightly-raced and unexposed Abdon looks worth a punt to provide trainer Sir Michael Stoute with a third winner of the Tercentenary Stakes. Steel Of Madrid is an improving sort and feared most.
