McIlroy heads betting for Sawgrass success

Rory McIlroy is the 8-1 favourite with leading bookmaker Coral to win The Players Championship this week at Sawgrass. The Northern Irishman tops the betting for the unofficial fifth major ahead of Jordan Spieth who can be backed at 10-1, while Jason Day is 12-1 to come out on top on Sunday.
“Despite the fact he has never won at Sawgrass before, Rory McIlroy has been a very popular favourite going into the unofficial fifth major this week,” said Coral’s John Hill.
“We’ve seen good support for Rickie Fowler defending his title, while each-way punters seem to be turning to Justin Rose as the best alternative from the big three in the betting,” added Hill.
