Murray must make clay court history to reign in Spain

Spain Tennis Madrid Open

Great Britain’s Andy Murray has lost all three of his previous career clay court battles with ATP world number one Novak Djokovic, and therefore he has it all to do in the Madrid Masters finals.

Coral naturally make Serbia star Djokovic odds-on 2/7 match favourite to win their latest encounter on this surface. Murray, meanwhile, is a sizeable 11/4 outsider to upset the top tennis pro on the planet.

When these two last met on clay, they contested the 2015 French Open semi-final at Roland Garros. Both will expect to figure at the business end of that Grand Slam again, which gets underway later this month.

Three sets looks likely

Roland Garros - Semi Final - Djokovic Defeats Murray

At least Murray is making matches against Djokovic more competitive, pushing the Serb to five sets when previously paired on this surface.

This Madrid Masters match-up is the best of three, however, and Djokovic is most appealing at 11/4 to lift this ATP Tour title 2-1.

Murray rarely wins the opening set against his Serbian foe, but back the Scot to take the second at a tasty 2/1 and that will ensure their battle goes the distance. Alternatively, over 2.5 sets in this match is a superb shout at 6/4.

Benefit from early breaks of serve

Spain Tennis Madrid Open

Djokovic tends to get a break of serve in early, and that makes the 11/4 on offer for him to lead 2-0 after a couple of games in the first set very tempting.

Tiebreaks are not uncommon between these two with three in their last eight head-to-heads, and odds of 6/5 say there will be one at some point in this match.

Coral’s top tip: Djokovic is an awesome 11/4 price to win the Madrid Masters by beating Murray two sets to one.
