Thetis can sail to success in Michael Seely Memorial

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute has his team in flying form and Thetis looks to hold leading claims of providing him with another winner in the Michael Seely Memorial Stakes at York (15:30).

The Newmarket handler has won two of the 15 runnings of the 1m Listed contest, saddling Peeress to win in 2005 and Pavlosk in 2013.

In Thetis, he has a filly who showed progressive form in three runs as a juvenile and looks the type to do even better as a three-year-old.

After shaping with bags of promise when third on debut at Newmarket, the daughter of Invincible Spirit opened her account on good style when staying on strongly to score comfortably by two lengths in a 7f maiden at Carlisle.

Excellent effort at Newmarket

Craven 1

Connections decided to pitch Thetis into Group 2 company on the back of that victory, and she ran a blinder when chasing home Promising Run over 7f at Newmarket.

After racing keenly in the earlier stages, Thetis made good headway to challenge a furlong from home and stuck to the task well to go down by 1 3/4 lengths.

The winner is a useful sort who finished an excellent third to leading Oaks prospect So Mi Dar in the Group 3 Musidora Stakes at the track earlier in the week, and the form reads well in the contest of this lower grade contest.

Thetis also looks the type who will have more to offer now stepped up in trip, and remains unexposed and open to any amount of improvement.

Nemoralia a major player

Nemoralia

Nemoralia had some top class form as a juveneile and looks the obvious danger to Thetis.

The Jeremy Noeseda trained filly chased home subsequent 1000 Guineas runner-up Ballydoyle on her second start at Newmarket, before opening her account at Kempton and following up with an impressive one length success in a competitive 19-runner nursery at Doncaster.

Nemoralia went on to finish runner-up in a Grade 1 contest at Belmont, and rounded off the camapaign with a cracking one length third to Catch a Glimpse in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf.

That form sets a clear standard in this line up, and Nemoralia has 10lb and upwards in hand on her rivals on official ratings.

However, the yard are going through a quite time of late having not saddle a winner since the beginning of March and the daughter of More Than Ready is more exposed than most and could prove vulnerable to a potentially improving horse like Thetis.

Coral’s top tip: Nemoralia sets a clear standard, but Thetis looks the type who could have plenty more to offer and worth a wager to provide Sir Michael Stoute with third winner of the race.
