Perth Festival Day 3 preview: Seldom Inn to strike for Sandy
David Metcalf | April 22, 2016
Good grounds to support Seldom Inn
Seldom Inn will appreciate the drying ground at Perth and can defy top weight to land the 3m 2f conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle (16:45).
The Sandy Thomson trained gelding scored twice over the smaller obstacles in 2014, and went on to post some solid efforts over fences last autumn.
They included and excellent neck second at Southwell off a mark of 134, and Sedlom Inn is now able to race in this off 129.
That gives Seldom Inn major claims at the weights and, although disappointing last time out at Newcastle on bottomless ground, the eight-year-old had previously run a cracker to finish fourth of 10 to Cup Final in a hot class 2 handicap at Musselburgh off 1lb higher.
The son of Double Trigger only got beat five lengths, and the third and sixth home have since come out and been placed at the Cheltenham Festival.
That gives the form a strong look in the context of this lower grade class 3 contest, and punters should be prepared to forgive Seldom Inn’s latest effort given that all three of his career successes have come on ground that has been good-to-soft or good.
Innis Shannon weighted to go well
In the 2m 4f handicap hurdle (15:05), Innis Shannon looks decent value to land the spoils.
The George Bewley trained mare got off the mark at Hexham back in November when sauntering clear to win by 30 lengths off a mark of 95.
Innis Shannon got whacked up 12lbs to 107 for that runaway success, and ran as if amiss off it when sent off 2/1 second favourite and finishing a distant fourth at Kelso.
The six-year-old was then given a break and shaped as if needing the outing at Ayr when fourth to W Six Times, making good headay from the rear two from home before being unable to find an extra and weakening to be beaten 24 lengths.
Innis Shannon backed that up with a decent third at Hexham last time out, sticking to the task well after making a number of costly errors.
Those two runs should have blown away the cobwebs, and the handicapper has been quick to drop her another 2lb.
Innis Shannon is now able to race off a rating of 100, just 5lb higher than when last victorious, and that makes the daughter of Stowaway look nicely treated on the pick of her form.
