Memorable moments from Chelsea v Man Utd matches

To celebrate a rather stupendous Super Sunday, as stumbling Premier League giants Chelsea host Manchester United in a star-studded scuffle, Coral cast our minds back to when this wrangle was often a high-stakes clash or title decider.

Chelsea v Man Utd

So, with excitement building before this battle, we present our hand-picked our most memorable moments from meetings between the Blues and Red Devils (14/5 with Coral to win) for punters to enjoy. Have we missed out any of your favourites? Let us know…

Heroic Eto’o hat-trick (Premier League, 2014)

Striker Samuel Eto’o hardly set Stamford Bridge alight during his one-season stint in west London, but the former Barcelona predator endeared himself to Blues fans by bagging a brilliant hat-trick to hand Chelsea a 3-1 league victory against their Red Devils rivals.

Neither side went on to win the title that term, but Eto’o and his efforts in this outing will be fondly remembered in this fixture. Watch below as the Cameroonian first jinks into the box and unleashes a deflected looping effort, before following that up with two pure poachers finishes. Deadly.

Extra-time proves a Hazard (Capital One Cup, 2012)

Back in their pomp, these two teams look almost unrecognisable as they attacked with abandon in this Capital One Cup fourth round fray, giving the early stage encounter a cup final feeling.

Man Utd initially steamed ahead through Ryan Giggs, but the Blues repeatedly came back from the brink to battle at the Bridge, with Eden Hazard’s cool spot-kick in the fourth minute of stoppage time completely changing the game complexion.

The capital club then turned the tide with a further two from Daniel Sturridge and Ramires in extra-time, to see Chelsea win 5-4, as time trickled out for United.

Check out the match highlights below:

Forlan finds the winner (Premier League, 2003)

Context was everything in this clash, as two perceived transfer flops in Juan Sebastian Veron and Diego Forlan combined beautifully to deliver victory.

An inch-perfect pass from Veron (soon to switch sides and play for Chelsea) split the guests open through the middle, and Forlan did the imaginative ball justice with his vicious first-time hit, volleying in a last minute winner.

Already a cult hero for downing Liverpool, Forlan cemented his fan favourite status, as this win helped Man Utd beat Arsenal to another title. Little did Old Trafford know, a certain Jose Mourinho would soon arrive to tilt the advantage a third way.

Terry slip (Champions League, 2008)

Of course no memorable moments feature would be complete with perhaps the most iconic. Another encounter between the London and Manchester clubs had gone to the wire, but this time on the biggest club stage of all.

Following a tense Champions League final in Moscow, and a testy tussle in extra-time, there was no difference in quality to be found on the pitch, forcing the Russian roulette of a penalty shootout.

At that point Chelsea (21/20 match favourites) were still waiting to claim Europe’s biggest crown, and skipper Terry assuredly stepped up to convert what would have been the winner, though the defender instead agonisingly slipped on the turf as he pulled the trigger.

Red Devils stopper Edwin van der Sar was the player who ended up cementing his legacy, with a save to deny lacklustre Nicolas Anelka, delivering euphoria to travelling Manchester fans. Pure drama, that could not be scripted. Remind yourself of Terry’s folly:

Torres delights Old Trafford (Premier League, 2011)

Just minutes after a characteristic corker of a long-range effort by mercurial wing wizard Nani, £50m man Fernando Torres had the chance to reply to that rocket.

In what proved to be a game of spectacle for all the right, and wrong reasons, the Spaniard was put through clean on goal by Ramires and rounded David de Gea, only to blast wide in a miss almost as spectacular as Nani’s strike, leaving fans with heads in hands.

The Chelsea flop forward did manage to get on the scoresheet later, but it was all in vain as United ran out 3-1 winners.

Last minute leveller after Ivanovic sees red (Premier League, 2014)

Triumph in football is so often about timing, and Manchester United certainly had it in this match, as they grabbed a last-gasp equaliser at Old Trafford.

History books may not look kindly on Angel Di Maria arguably going too easily to ground, but the Argentine won a crucial free-kick as Louis van Gaal’s guys strove to achieve a top four finish that season.

Thibaut Courtois could only parry Marouane Fellaini’s fierce header, pushing the ball back out to lurking Robin van Persie, who lashed home. Branislav Ivanovic’s height and aerial prowess would surely have been handy at that moment, but the defender had already dramatically seen red for a second bookable offence following Di Maria’s tumble.
