Grand National bets to be boosted by later start time

Many Clouds is clear 12/1 favourite for the 2016 renewal of the Crabbies’ Grand National with Coral, with six horses sharing co-second favouritism at 25/1.

Don Poli and Silviniaco Conti are both 25/1 chances for the races with Coral, while the Coral Welsh Grand National winner, Mountainous, is a 40/1 chance.

With the entries published today, Coral took the opportunity to reaffirm the importance of the Grand National to bookmakers and horse racing, and predict that the later start time will deliver further growth in turnover on the race.

“The Grand National is by far the most important race of the year for the British Horse Racing industry, and for Britain’s bookmakers, and a day when the partnership between these two industries delivers maximum mutual benefit,” said Simon Clare, Coral Spokesman.

“Commercially it has enormous significance, as turnover on the Grand National is ten times bigger than the next biggest betting race, The Cheltenham Gold Cup, but the huge betting and television audience also makes it the most important showcase of the year for the sport of racing and the thrill of betting”, added Clare.

“The later start time is a very positive move as over 98% of Grand National bets are struck on the day, and every year we see many once-a-year punters rush in to shops in the last hour to hastily get their bets on. The extra hour this year effectively increases the window for taking bets in betting shops on Grand National day by roughly 10%, and will definitely deliver an increase in turnover on the event”, said Clare.

“The entries for this year’s Grand National look as strong as ever, and with Many Clouds on target to defend his title, this hugely important race looks in excellent health”, concluded Clare.
