Frampton and Quigg finally square off

After four years of waiting and many months of heated build-up, IBF super-bantamweight champion Carl Frampton finally collides with WBA Super title-holder Scott Quigg at the Manchester Arena this Saturday night.

The pair have held a long-standing rivalry stretching back way before either was crowned a world champion, but they now clash in front of a sell-out Manchester crowd and the live Box Office cameras.

Having been undergoing his preparations in London with Shane McGuigan, Belfast fighter Frampton (21-0, 14 KOs) has made the trip north to Quigg’s (31-0-2, 23 KOs) hometown, though he will be represented by a huge Irish following and is 6/4 with Coral to secure a points decision victory this weekend.

‘The Jackal’ out to prove himself

‘The Jackal’ faces his toughest career test to date and, with both champions entering the ring undefeated professionally, the stakes couldn’t be higher in this highly awaited 122 pounds unification scrap.

Bury-born competitor Quigg will hope to prevail on his own patch and is 5/2 to do so by knockout, but his visiting opponent is ready to silence any doubters and prove he’s the best in the division.

“It has been a long time coming. I have been after this fight for four and a half, maybe five years. To be here and only a couple of days away – I’m like a kid at Christmas,” stated the 29-year-old, who is 5/2 to win by KO.

“I’ve wanted this fight for a long time. I want to prove I am the best super-bantamweight in the UK and the only way I can do that is by beating Scott Quigg.

“There are still some doubters but this is going to be the fight where people sit up and say ‘Wow, Frampton can fight’ and those doubters will start following me, I promise.”

Should Frampton triumph in his third defence of the IBF crown, he would surpass the achievements of mentor and hall of fame inductee Barry McGuigan, who successfully retained his featherweight straps twice, with victory also set to propel the winner to potential international stardom.

Quigg seeks ‘defining’ career win

Home hope Quigg has admitted that there is no room for any errors in the biggest fight of his career and realises this is the defining moment for him since bursting onto the scene back in 2007.

“It is the biggest stage either of us have boxed on and if you can’t get excited about something like this then we are in the wrong game,” outlined the Joe Gallagher-trained champion, who is 7/1 to triumph in rounds 7-9.

“Training has gone perfect. I feel good. But there is a lot on the line so there is no room for error. Believe me I won’t be making any mistakes.

“It all comes down to this moment…”

“This is a big fight. I got into boxing to be a world champion. I set out to do that and I have achieved that.

“But this is the biggest stage – Sky Box Office, pay per view. To be able to perform on this platform, this is everything I’ve worked towards and it all comes down to this moment.

“I will tell you what, I am one million per cent confident I am going to win.”

In the chief support to the main event, Doncaster’s Gavin McDonnell will aim to move closer towards a world title shot with a momentous win over Jorge Sanchez, and the Dave Coldwell-trained super-bantamweight is 5/2 to give the crowd a KO to cheer.

Meanwhile, upcoming Irish prospects Conrad Cummings (1/100) and Ryan Burnett (1/50) are in action against Giga Nadiradze and Anthony Settoul respectively, with their compatriot Marco McCullough 10/3 to stop Isaac Lowe.

All eyes will be on the main event though as Frampton and Quigg finally end years of anticipation with their super-bantamweight unification match-up, in what could be an explosive night in Manchester.

Crawford seeks statement showing over Lundy

In the weekend’s biggest contest on American soil, Terence Crawford will put his WBO light-welterweight title on the line against Hank Lundy, having missed out on a high-profile meeting with imminently retiring Manny Pacquiao.

Nebraska-born champion Crawford (27-0, 19 KOs) had hoped to meet Pacquiao in the ring, but the Filipino legend opted for a third dust-up with Timothy Bradley instead, but the WBO champion is focused on the task in hand and is 5/1 to triumph in rounds 1-3.

“I wasn’t disappointed in the least [about Pacquiao fight], even though I would have loved to have fought him,” Crawford said. “Me and Bradley are good friends. He deserved the fight as much as anyone.

“I’m 100 per cent focused..”

“I’m not in the business of picking and choosing who I fight. That’s someone else’s job, not mine. I’m fighting Lundy and so I’ve gotten ready for him. I’m 100 percent focused on doing my job on Saturday.

“I don’t worry about any of that kind of stuff, the business things. Once you have a fight, you go into fight mode and you don’t allow yourself to think about any of that. You just get ready for the fight you have. If you keep on winning, things take care of themselves.”

Undefeated ‘Bud’ is 10/1 to face a shock maiden loss in the early hours of Sunday morning, while Kiko Martinez, who has previously lost to both Frampton and Quigg, is 7/1 to claim the WBA Super featherweight strap from Leo Santa Cruz in California.
