The Magpies had already snapped up Henri Saivet, Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend during this January transfer window and were linked to West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino, but a loan contract for Ivory Coast international Doumbia has further bolstered their campaign prospects.
McClaren’s Toon have been involved in a relegation tussle this term and are odds-on 4/7 with Coral to retain their top-flight status, with their latest signing set to boost their chances of such a target during the season run-in.
Doumbia the next Ivorian icon?
Newcastle’s new 28-year-old loan signing has long outlined his desire to realise his ‘dream’ of playing in the Premier League, and he will now have the opportunity to do so and help overturn the Magpies’ fortunes this season.
Doumbia only signed for parent club Roma at this time last year from CSKA Moscow, but struggled massively to make an impact in the Serie A. Although, after 66 league goals in two stints in Russia and 50 strikes in 64 games in the Swiss Super League for BSC Young Boys, he could propel himself to stardom at St James’ Park.
The Ivorian will look to follow in the footsteps of fellow countrymen who have succeeded in England’s top tier, with former African player of the year and African Cup winner Yaya Toure enjoying success at Manchester City, while his brother Kolo continues to ply his trade at Liverpool.
As well as these Ivory Coast stars, Doumbia joins new teammate and compatriot Cheick Tiote on Tyneside, with Man City’s Wilfried Bony and Everton’s Arouna Kone also starring in the Premier League. Gervinho and Salomon Kalou are other Ivorians who have previously earned relative merit in the top tier with Arsenal and Chelsea respectively, not forgetting Blues hero Didier Drogba too.
New Toon marksman ready to make impact
The latest Magpies arrival will aim to make his own impact on the Premier League in the Northeast, with Newcastle 6/5 to face a daunting drop down divisions, stating: “I’m delighted to be a Newcastle United player.
“I’ve already started to prepare. I’ve arrived and I’m ready to go. It has always been a dream to play in the Premier League and now that dream has come true, so I’m absolutely delighted.
“I am looking forward to helping the Club get some wins and climb the table.”
