Weekend in pictures

Following another memorable weekend from the world of sport, with FA Cup shocks and excitement at the Coral Welsh Grand National among others, here are the pictures to highlight the thrills that took place.

Richards responds to fans after Villa’s Wycombe draw

Wycombe Wanderers v Aston Villa - Emirates FA Cup - Third Round - Adams Park

Following another poor result for top-flight strugglers Villa, skipper Micah Richards came face-to-face with travelling fans to listen to their thoughts on a 1-1 FA Cup stalemate with Wycombe Wanderers. The Villans captain opened proceedings before a Joe Jacobson second-half penalty and was involved in an angry exchange after the game at Adams Park.

Mountainous ride at Welsh Grand National

Welsh Grand National - Chepstow Races

Former Welsh Grand National winner Mountainous was ridden to another victory at Chepstow Racecourse by Jamie Moore, seen here clearing the final fence before becoming the first double victor since Bonanza Boy in 1989. The 11-year-old, trained by Kerry Lee, triumphed back in 2013 and was a 9/1 shot entering this time out, edging out Firebird Flyer (25-1) and Shotgun Paddy (12-1) to second and third respectively.

Rooney’s late penalty spares Sheffield blushes for Man Utd

Manchester United v Sheffield United - Emirates FA Cup - Third Round - Old Trafford

Manchester United looked to be heading for another dreary 0-0 at Old Trafford until Wayne Rooney confidently fired in a late penalty to earn a narrow 1-0 FA Cup third round victory over Sheffield United. Impact sub Memphis Depay won the spot-kick after a mazy run into the visitors’ danger area, with the skipper then earning an unconvincing triumph.

De Carolis claims WBA belt over Feigenbutz

Boxing - Vincent Feigenbutz vs Giovanni De Carolis

Giovanni De Carolis became the new WBA super-middleweight champion with a shock 11th-round stoppage of German opponent Vincent Feigenbutz in Offenburg. The new Italian world champion gained revenge for his initial loss in this rematch on German soil, pinning his young challenger against the ropes and forcing referee Gustavo Padilla to step in and halt the contest.

Roofe raised as Oxford overcome Swansea in FA Cup

Oxford United v Swansea City - Emirates FA Cup - Third Round - Kassam Stadium

In the biggest FA Cup upset of the weekend’s action, League Two Oxford United toppled Premier League opposition Swansea City 3-2 in the third round, thanks to a brilliant brace from Kemar Roofe. Jefferson Montero opened proceedings with a superb strike, as Liam Sercombe then levelled from the spot, before Roofe sealed a stunning coup despite a late Bafetimbi Gomis goal.

Kane seals Spurs replay with Leicester from spot

Britain Soccer FA Cup

Tottenham’s second-half substitute Harry Kane dispatched a late penalty under the White Hart Lane floodlights to keep his side’s FA Cup dreams alive, with his clinical spot-kick securing a 2-2 draw with Leicester City. Shinji Okazaki had also come off the bench to strike for the Foxes, after goals from Christian Eriksen and Marcin Wasilewski, but Kane made sure the Premier League rivals would meet again in the third round.

Master Murphy downed by Allen at Alexandra Palace

Dafabet Masters 2016 - Day One - Alexandra Palace

Defending Masters snooker champion Shaun Murphy was knocked out of this year’s event at Alexandra Palace in the opening match-up by Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen 6-4. The Magician was far from his best, haplessly losing a frame through the miss rule on his way to exiting at the hands of friend and deadly cueist Allen.
