Five January transfer window signings that make sense

January is always a tricky time for buying players, with clubs often unwilling to sell while others find it hard to agree a price, though Coral discuss which five signings would make the most the sense in this current transfer window.

Nigel de Jong to Leicester City

While the Foxes have performed admirably so far in the Premier League and have a number of players who can cover in central midfield, this former English top-flight winner would add real quality and experience. Linked in recent weeks, he has featured just six times this term for AC Milan and would relish a move back to England.

With summer signing Gokhan Inler said to be struggling to fit in and reportedly seeking a move back to Serie A, pouncing for De Jong, even on loan could turn out to be a very savvy decision.

Charlie Austin to Bournemouth

There were tentative links in the summer, though with Callum Wilson injured, the Cherries lack a credible striker who can fully shoulder the scoring responsibility. While he would likely command at least £10m, Bournemouth do have cash reserves and, having proved he can score in the Premier League last season, he could prove to be a wise investment.

Loic Remy to Crystal Palace

In recent matches, the Eagles’ goals seem to have dried up, so a move for Chelsea’s French striker may prove favourable for all parties. Remy would link up again with manager Alan Pardew, who he spent time under during a successful loan spell at Newcastle United from QPR. With Diego Costa back in scoring form and the Blues reportedly chasing forward additions, this move could well happen.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal

Perhaps as sensationalist as we’ve dared to go, though reports are circulating that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is mulling over a £42m move for the Borussia Dortmund striker, who has 27 goals in 27 appearances across all competitions so far this season.

Hannover 96 vs Borussia Dortmund

While there could be a suggestion that the Gabon international would upset the attacking balance and chemistry of the north London side, there is no doubting his talent and his goals can deliver silverware. Perhaps crucially, he would be a welcome boost for Arsenal’s Champions League campaign, with the club facing a tough test against Barcelona in the last 16, with the Gunners 33/1 with Coral to win the competition.

Joel Matip to Liverpool

There is no doubting that the Reds need a central defender and Schalke’s Cameroon centre back has been linked in recent weeks. With his contract said to be up in the summer, Liverpool may move to prevent other clubs snapping him up, while the German outfit would also get a fee for him.
