Tottenham seek January reinforcements

Having missed out on the signing of West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino last summer, and the Baggies frontman’s future still shrouded in doubt, Tottenham have turned their attentions to a new January transfer window target.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs have witnessed another fine goal-scoring season from in-form marksman Harry Kane, but the Londoners are seeking attacking reinforcements for the Premier League run-in, with the club highlighting Toulouse’s Wissam Ben Yedder as a potential arrival.

The Ligue 1 attacker has bagged 12 goals in 21 appearances this season and is a positive alternative to West Brom’s Berahino, with Ben Yedder also rated a much more encouraging price of £7.5m.

New target Yedder than Berahino?

Spurs’ French frontman target has been in clinical form in front of goal recently, dispatching an impressive seven times in his previous five outings, and the 25-year-old would undoubtedly ease the heavy scoring burden on Kane this term.

Ben Yedder’s heroics in the French top-flight are helping Toulouse battle against relegation to Ligue 2, and his present contract ties him down to the second-from-bottom club until 2017, with their president Olivier Sadran stating they will fight to retain their star man.

“Wissan is a fantastic boy who will leave in June,” said Sadran. “He will go in conditions that are attractive to him. More interesting than today, more choices and financially better. We have to keep him.”

Toon tracking Townsend

Steve McClaren’s Newcastle United have already surprisingly spent big this season with the capture of both Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet this month, but they are still seeking further squad improvements, with Tottenham’s Andros Townsend outlined as a target.

The Toon reportedly had a bid of £10m turned down by the capital club last week and have been told to meet the £14m evaluation of the England international wideman in order to sign him in this winter window.

If the Magpies see Spurs’ highlighted sum as too extortionate then other names in the pipeline are QPR’s Matt Phillips or Scott Sinclair of Aston Villa, with the latter maybe keen to jump from what is a sinking West Midlands ship under Remi Garde.
