Konta and Muguruza matches on day four

You can still feel the shockwaves emanating from Melbourne after Great Britain representative Johanna Konta eliminated eighth seed Venus Williams in the opening round of the Australian Open women’s singles.

Third seed Garbine Muguruza (9/1 tournament chance with Coral), meanwhile, will fancy her chances of beating Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens and the progress of other seeds through to the last 32 looks on the cards, despite other high-profile early exits.

With the likes of former Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka (5/2 second-favourite for a third crown) and seventh seed Angelique Kerber (25/1 shot) facing straightforward second round fixtures, which they are overwhelmingly odds-on to win, our tennis writers point punters to some value bets below.

Saisai Zheng should hold no fear for Konta

Sydney-born Konta has a Grand Slam victory over Chinese player Saisai Zheng under her belt already – at the French Open in straight sets back in 2013. A repeat of that victory is a 2/9 chance, with the exact scoreline better at 8/13.

As Zheng knocked out the higher-ranked Carina Witthoft in her first Australian Open outing, that suggests Konta will not have things all her own way. Backing the British representative to come through in three sets appeals at 11/4, then.

The aforementioned Kerber and Muguruza come together with men’s singles 13th seed Milos Raonic in a 15/8 Australian Open second round special, in which all three need to win their matches in straight sets, and it looks on the cards.

Allertova and Gorges worth backing in Czech v German clashes

Neighbours Germany and the Czech Republic have two tennis encounters in Konta’s section of the draw, and backing the match outsiders to come through both appeal.

Australian Open Tennis

Denisa Allertova beat 30th seed Sabine Lisicki in their only previous meeting (also on a hard surface), so a 7/4 price on the Czech youngster upsetting the 2013 Wimbledon finalist holds plenty of merit.

Number nine seed Karolina Pliskova should be very wary of Julia Gorges, meanwhile, as the German pushed her all the way in their one head-to-head and has performed better at the Australian Open.

Tennis - 2015 French Open - Day Five - Roland Garros

Going with Gorges at a nifty 9/4, who has made the last 16 in Melbourne three times in the last four tournaments, looks like splendid value. Pliskova cannot seem to put it together at Grand Slams, and is yet to grace the second week of any, so this has all the hallmarks of a potential giant-killing.

Will Serbian seeds progress?

Ana Ivanovic, the 2008 French Open champion, will seek a first-ever victory over Anastasija Sevastova (3/1 to cause an upset), having lost to the Latvian at Indian Wells in 2010. Odds-on at 1/4 for this match, Serbian pro Ivanovic is better at 4/6 to level the head-to-head record with a straight sets victory.

Tennis - 2013 Australian Open - Day Five - Melbourne Park

Compatriot Jelena Jankovic is still searching for the formula to rediscover her 2008 vintage, and encounters Germany’s Laura Siegemund (4/1 to pull off a shock), who is on her best Grand Slam run to date.

Like Ivanovic with Sevastova, this tie is a potential banana skin for firm 1/6 match favourite Jankovic, and she shouldn’t underestimate Siegemund in their maiden meeting.

Coral’s top tip: Allertova is very attractive indeed at 7/4 to send Lisicki out of the Australian Open.
