Newcastle v Liverpool: Nineties nostalgia cult heroes from both

With Newcastle set to entertain Liverpool in the Premier League, Coral take a look back at some of the cult heroes of both sides from the Nineties, with the Reds 8/1 to win the title this term.
David James: Liverpool
Where better place to start? One of the most travelled Premier League goalkeepers, the stopper was an iconic figure at Anfield during his time and can definitely be classed as a cult hero.
Between 1992 and 1999 James made 214 appearances for the club and it was his form for the Reds that earned him a call-up to the England team in 1997 with the 45-year-old going to feature 53 times until 2010. Known for his agility, James pulled off a number of sensational saves throughout his career.
Phil Babb: Liverpool
A bedrock of the Reds rearguard between 1994 and 2000, Babb made 128 appearances for the Reds, also managing to get onto the scoresheet once. He joined Liverpool the same year that he got into the Republic of Ireland squad, making 35 outings until 2002.
Nikos Dabizas: Newcastle
The Greek centre back marshalled the Magpies defence for six years from 1998 making 130 appearances, and became somewhat of a goal threat, netting 11 times in his Tyneside tenure.
Jamie Redknapp: Liverpool
We couldn’t not mention this Reds legend. Between 1991 and 2002 Redknapp made 237 appearances for the club, scoring 30 goals in the process. A creative force, and highly technical on the ball, he was one of the best central midfielders of his generation and deserved to feature more times than the 17 occasions he did for England.
David Ginola: Newcastle
While he only scored six goals in 58 appearances for Newcastle, there is no doubt that the French icon can be considered a cult hero. Stylish in both his playing style and appearance, fans will have fond memories of him marauding down the wing in the black and white.
Nolberto Solano: Newcastle
The Peruvian winger had two stints with the club, his first between 1998 and 2004 with the second coming between 2005 and 2007. During his initial spell, he scored 37 times in 182 appearances and swiftly became a fan favourite for his industry and willingness to take on opponents.
Ian Rush: Liverpool
In his second spell at the Reds between 1988 and 1996 the forward found the net on 90 occasions in 245 outings and was a key member of the squad. Arguably one of the best strikers to come through the club, Rush was a naturally instinctive scorer.
Faustino Asprilla: Newcastle
Another Magpies icon, the Colombian forward made 48 appearances for the side, however, he only scored nine goals between 1996 and 1998. Nevertheless, he built up a considerable fan club and is still fondly remembered in the north east even today.
Robbie Fowler: Liverpool
One more who had two separate stints at the Reds, between 1993 and 2001 Fowler featured 236 times, scoring 120 goals in the process, with his first 100 available to view below. He was one of Liverpool’s most clinical finishers of the nineties.
Alan Shearer: Newcastle
Last but certainly by no means least is Coral’s very own. From 1996 until 2006, the Magpies legend struck 148 goals in 303 appearances, establishing himself as one of the most feared centre forwards in the Premier League and is still adored around St James’ Park, where fans still chant his name on matchday.
