Newcastle preview: Pamak D’airy primed for repeat success

Pamak D’airy can take advantage of a drop in the weights to land back-to-back successes in the 2m handicap chase at Newcastle today (12.50).
The Henry Hogarth trained gelding is a four-time course and distance winner, and the last of those successes came in this contest 12 months ago.
After tracking the leaders, Pamak D’airy took up the running five from home and after being headed narrowly at the last showed tremendous battling qualities to get back up and beat Trust Thomas by 1/2 a length off a mark of 106.
The 12-year-old got put up to 110 for that victory and was not at his best in three subsequent outings despite being far from disgraced on the last of those when third at Sedgefield off 107.
However, that has resulted in the handicapper cutting Pamak D’airy some slack and he is now able to race off a reduced rating of 104.
That is 2lb lower than when last successful and gives the son of Cadoubel major claims from a handicapping perspective.
Pamak D’airy also comes into the contest having shaped well in a pipe-opener over hurdles at this venue last month, and that should have put him spot on to defend his crown.
Redkalani rated for 2m handicap hurdle
In the 2m handicap hurdle (13.20), Redkalani looks nicely treated on the pick of his form and decent value to land the spoils.
The Keith Reveley’s gelding had some useful form to his name in bumpers, including at this venue when third to the now 130-rated Seldom Inn on debut and fourth to Grove Silver who is now rated 127.
Redkalani went on to be given an easy time in his first three starts over hurdles, before shaping better than the bare result suggests last time out on handicap debut over course and distance when seventh of 17 to Northern Acres off an opening mark of 100.
The seven-year-old made a couple of costly jumping errors before keeping on under tender handling to be nearest at the finish an beaten just over 11 lengths.
It was an effort which suggested Redkalani should be up to winning a race of this nature, and the handicapper has been quick to drop him 3lb to 97.
That looks exploitable on the pick of his bumper form, and granted a better round of hurdling this looks a nice opportunity for Redkalani to open his account.
