Following the unsurprising news that Liverpool and England striker Daniel Sturridge will be out yet again for ‘several weeks’, Coral pick five other current and former Three Lions internationals whose careers were hindered with such misfortune.

Prolific-when-fit Sturridge (whose Reds are 12/1 with Coral to win the Premier League) suffered his latest set-back, a hamstring injury in the 2-0 loss to Newcastle United, after only just recovering from knee and foot problems.

Darren Anderton

Soccer - Euro 2000 Qualifier - Group 5 - Sweden v England

Known simply as ‘Sicknote’, starting from his time at first club Portsmouth (apparently given by former keeper Andy Gosney) and finishing with Bournemouth, the attacker did well to earn 30 caps across seven years.

Despite his injury troubles, though, Anderton did play almost 300 times for Tottenham, and won the League Cup with them in 1999.

Kieron Dyer

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Bolton Wanderers v West Ham United - Reebok Stadium

Former Newcastle United midfielder Dyer is known more recently for his appearance on reality TV show I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, but could not fulfil his potential after spending much time on the sidelines, especially in the latter years of his career.

Owen Hargreaves

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Manchester United v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Old Trafford

Canadian-born Hargreaves at his peak was one of the world’s best defensive midfielders, especially when on the books of Bayern Munich, where he won much silverware.

However, following his move to Manchester United – after a great first season – he managed just to feature just five times in his last four campaigns with them due to knee troubles. Hargreaves attempted to revive his career with rivals Man City, but gave up after four games.

Michael Owen

Soccer - 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany - Group B - Sweden v England - RheinEnergieStadion

A young Owen burst onto the scene as a Liverpool and England striker when a prolific scorer, but since his departure from the Merseysiders, his career went rather downhill, mainly due to his injury record.

Many would have have been lucky to win the amount of caps and trophies he did, but he had the potential to be a world beater. Now fans can be subjected to his views and commentary on BT Sport.

Jack Wilshere

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Arsenal v Stoke City - Emirates Stadium

The only current player on this list, Arsenal’s 23-year-old Wilshere has a fine future ahead of him, if he can somehow find a way of combating his various niggles particularly to his ankle.

It would be a shame if Wilshere doesn’t fulfil his potential, especially when England’s quality of stars are seemingly declining since their so-called Golden Generation.
