Chelmsford preview: Zip has a Mighty chance
David Metcalf | December 7, 2015
Mighty Zip bounced back to form when scoring last time out and can make light of a rise in the weights to follow-up in the 6f handicap on today’s card at Chelmsford (15.10).
The Kevin Ryan trained gelding showed plenty of pace to track the leaders, before being driven to lead inside the final furlong and beat Hoofalong by a neck over course and distance.
To my eyes the three-year-old scored a shade cosily, and a 4lb rise to a mark of 76 looks on the lenient side.
Mighty Zip has been placed off higher in the past, and having now won two of his six starts on the all-weather is clearly well suited by the polytrack surface.
The son of City Zip also looks the type who may have even more to offer now that he has got his head back in front and, with Jamie Spencer in the saddle, everything looks in place for a huge run.
Up the ante on Upavon
In the 1m handicap (15.40), Upavaon is well-treated on the pick of his form and can go well at a big price.
The gelding scored twice at the track when trained by David Elsworth, with the last of those successes coming over 6f back in April off a mark of 90.
Upavon is now able to race off the same rating having shaped really well off 2lb higher last time out when fifth of 12 to Mindurownbusiness in a class 2 contest over course and distance on his first start for Stuart Williams.
The four-year-old lost vital ground at the start when rearing and slowly away, but then made good headway two from home to be closing at the line and beaten 4 1/4 lengths.
It was a very eye-catching effort given how the race panned out, and the form reads well in the context of this lower grade class 3 affair.
Upavon also has the services in the saddle of 5lb claimer Aaron Jones, and taking it into account looks weighted to run a huge race if getting away on level terms.
