Spurs to sign Vida in January?

Tottenham are linked with a winter window swoop for Dynamo Kiev and Croatia international defender Domagoj Vida in the weekend tabloids.

Mauricio Pochettino’s improving Spurs are 5/4 with Coral to record a top four finish this term and, despite having nine defenders in their current first-team squad, the Argentine head coach is keen to add to those options in January.

The emergence of Eric Dier as a defensive midfielder is understood to be the reason behind Tottenham’s interest in 26-year-old Vida.

Dier delivers in defensive midfield

Previously played in the Spurs XI at centre half or right back, England cap Dier has instead flourished as an anchorman. Vida can also cover the same defensive positions, though Kiev would be reluctant to lose him during their winter break.

Should Dynamo fail to advance from a tough Champions League pool that also contains Chelsea and Porto, however, then they are reportedly willing to sell, although Tottenham could be direct Europa League rivals of Kiev.

Spurs has been home to three other Croatia internationals in recent years. Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric, Harry Redkanpp favourite Niko Kranjcar and versatile defender Vedran Corluka all played at White Hart Lane between 2008 and 2012.

Could old boss Bilic vie for Vida?

Capped 33 times for the Blazers since being given a senior international debut against Wales just before the 2010 World Cup, Vida has worked with current West Ham United boss Slaven Bilic before.

If Dynamo are willing to sell him for the right price, interest from Tottenham’s London rivals could emerge in Vida, especially if former Hammers boss Sam Allardyce comes back for James Collins in January and takes him to Sunderland.

Black Cats defending has left a lot to be desired, and the rumour mill has inevitably linked Big Sam with poaching players from his old team. Vida represents a realistic target for 11/2 top six chances West Ham, with Bilic already bringing another compatriot in Nikica Jelavic to Upton Park.
