Leicester City 1-1 Manchester United

  • Jamie Vardy breaks Premier League record
  • Bastian Schweinsteiger levels
  • Leicester slip to second on goal difference in Premier League

Top two trade attacks

Hours before two heavyweights went head-to-head in the ring, top two Premier League clubs, Leicester City and Manchester United met in a showdown at the King Power Stadium.

An interesting lineup from Louis van Gaal who implemented a 3-5-2 it seemed initially as though it would pay off. Ashley Young appeared to be the cause of early problems for United, providing a constant threat down the left for the Red Devils, whipping a number of crosses in during the early stages.

With Leicester, 6/4 with Coral to beat Swansea next time out, appearing content to play on the counter-attack, they gradually eased into the match and gave United’s rearguard something to think about.

Record breaker

As a United corner was cleared, the Foxes broke with left back Christian Fuchs marauding down the right, while Vardy, 20-yards ahead of him, left Young standing as he zipped past him to latch onto Fuchs’ through ball to loft over David de Gea. Expectantly, the din was deafening as the striker surpassed Ruud van Nistlerooy’s consecutive scoring record against the Dutchman’s former club.

Not long after, Leicester’s lead could have doubled. Riyad Mahrez interchanged on the edge of the area scampering through to fire at De Gea, only to win a corner; it was like watching Barcelona.

United draw level

In typical fashion, with the hosts dominating and former United man Danny Drinkwater running practically both midfield’s, the visitors drew level, virtually on half time.

Out-muscling Japanese striker Shinji Okazaki from a corner, German Bastian Schweinsteiger connected to nod into the net past Kasper Schmeichel, bringing the game level.

Pulsating second period

It was the visitors who started the brighter after the interval and Schweinsteiger could have doubled his tally, though drew a fine save from Schmeichel.

Not long after, it was the turn of Vardy who just couldn’t get on the end of a ball in the area as the Foxes countered.

With Manchester City, having already won and other Premier League top four contenders Arsenal and Tottenham in action the following day, top spot was at stake for both sides, though despite the result, this match was all about one man.
