Newbury preview (14.45): Globalisation, Geraghty look the business

Globalisation looked a smart prospect when making a winning debut over fences and can make light of a 5lb rise in the weights to follow up in the 2m 6f Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase on today’s card at Newbury (14.45).

The Rebecca Curtis trained gelding won a bumper at Aintree on his second start before going on to shape with plenty of promise over hurdles last season.

However, Globalisation is a strapping sort who looked the type that would come into his own went sent chasing and anything that he achieved over hurdles was always going to be a bonus.

That view that view was confirmed when the five-year-old ran out the ready winner of a 2m 2f novices’ handicap chase at Ffos Las earlier in the month.

After being held-up off the pace, Globalisation was produced to challenge at the last before being shaken-up to win going away by three lengths off a mark of 115.

The son of Tikannen scored with far more in hand than the winning margin suggests, and a 5lb rise in the weights looks more than fair given the manner of the victory.

Globalisation also looks sure to appreciate the step up in trip given how he finished off the race, and now gets the services of Barry Geraghty in the saddle.

Although Geraghty is the retained jockey of Globalisation’s owner JP McManus, it’s interesting that he takes the ride given that the horse carries 10st 7lb.

It is just 1lb higher than the lowest weight Geraghty has ridden off in the last 12 months, so he will have had to have made an effort to get down to it and clearly thinks the horse has a huge chance.

Chosen Well joint-favourite

There are plenty of dangers in wide-open contest, and Chosen Well may prove the biggest.

Trained by Alan King, the gelding impressed when landing a Chepstow novice hurdle on debut under rules and should a good attitude to follow-up under a penalty at Exeter.

Chosen Well was the far from disgraced when fourth in two decent handicaps, and may well have more to offer now switched to chasing given that he was a point winner in Ireland before joining King.
