Ludlow preview: King Massini to reign supreme

King Massini shaped really well on seasonal reappearance and can take advantage of a drop in the weights to score an overdue success in the 3m handicap chase at Ludlow today (15.00).
The Evan Williams trained gelding developed into a useful chaser in 2013 when winning three times, with his last success coming off a mark of 120 at this venue when easily beating Rydalis by seven lengths.
King Massini got whacked up 11lb to 131 for that victory, but is now able to race off 115 having posted several solid efforts to make the frame off higher marks.
That makes the nine-year-old look dangerously well-treated on the pick of his form, and King Massini comes into the contest on the back of an eye-catching effort when fourth fourth of 11 to Azure Fly at this venue.
The son of Dr Massini looked in need of the run beforehand, and made a couple of costly errors before staying on to be beaten four lengths.
It was an effort which suggested his time was near, and King Massini looks sure to come on a bundle for the outing.
Another plus is that King Massini runs the venue well having won twice and been placed once in seven starts at the track, and with the stable in good form this looks a great opportunity for him to get back to winning ways.
Grimley Girl a great shout on larger obstacle debut
In the 2m novices’ handicap chase (14.00), Grimley Girl looks weighted to make a winning debut over the larger obstacles.
The Henry Oliver trained mare showed improved form throughout last season when winning twice and being placed on five occasions from seven starts.
In the last of those successes, the nine-year-old scored 4 1/2 lengths at Market Rasen off a mark of 104.
Grimley Girl went on to round off the campaign with a solid one length second at the same venue off 109, and is now able to race off 2lb lower.
It makes the daughter of Sir Harry Lewis look very well-treated if taking to the larger obstacles, and Grimley Girl is a point winner who has the size and scope to make up into a decent chaser.
