Trainer James Fanshawe does tremendously well with his runners at Kempton, and Landwade Lad looks to hold leading claims of providing him with another winner in the 1m 3f handicap on today’s card at the Sunbury-on-Thames venue (17.10).

The in-form Newmarket handler has a strike rate of 25 per cent with his runners at the track in the past 12 months, and in Landwade Lad has a progressive sort who has run his best races on the polytrack surface.

Following a string of solid placed efforts, the three-year-old got off the mark in superb style over course and distance three starts back when slamming Soluble by 3 1/4 lengths off a mark of 80.

Landwade Lad backed that up with a cracking nose second to Majeed off 86, again over course and distance, when finishing with a real rattle having arguably been given too much to do.

The son of Dansili then failed to shine when last see in action at Chester, but all Landwade Lad’s best form has come on an artificial surface and the return to this venue is sure to suit.

Landwade Lad’s form at the track reads 212 and, with Tom Queally in the saddle, he looks weighted to take all the beating off a rating of 89.

Stick a bundle on Afjaan

In the 1m handicap (15.00), Afjaan can take advantage of what looks a lenient mark to land the spoils.

Ebor day 2

The William Haggas trained gelding shaped with bags of promise on his sole run as a juvenile when fourth of 16 to the now 97-rated Rare Rhythm at Newmarket, and showed a good attitude to get off the mark when overcoming a lengthy absence to beat Pensax Boy by 1/2 a length at Beverley last month.

Afjaan showed plenty of pace to track the leaders before staying on strongly under a hands and heels ride to get up close home and win going away.

To me the son of Henrythenavigator was value for far more than the winning margin, and an opening handicapping mark of 79 may seriously underestimate Afjaan’s ability.

Judged on his debut effort the lightly-raced and unexposed three-year-old looks potentially thrown-in at the weights, and with Pat Cosgrave in the saddle Afjaan can take this before going on to better things.

Selections:

14.25: Karmadal
15.00: Afjaan (NB)
15.35: Outer Space
16.10: Marylebone
16.40: My Target
17.10: Landwade Lad
17.40: Showtime Blues
