Villa appoint Garde

  • Frenchman signs on three-and-a-half year deal
  • Tasked with saving club from drop
  • Will sit in stands for Monday night clash with Spurs
  • Previous Premier League experience is as a player with Arsenal

Garde must win points immediately

Premier League basement club Aston Villa (13/8 chances with Coral to stay up) have announced the appointment of Frenchman Remi Garde as their new boss, following the recent sacking of Tim Sherwood.

The former Lyon head coach and Arsenal player has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the West Midlands outfit, in a bid to save them from the drop.

What will Garde bring to the club?

“It is an unbelievable honour to be the manager of such an illustrious football club,” Garde said.

“I’ve had extremely positive meetings with both the owner, Randy Lerner, and chief executive Tom Fox. They have ambitious plans for the club and I’m excited that they have turned to me to help them realise them.

“Obviously we have a difficult task in front of us but I’m looking forward to the challenge with the support of everyone who loves Aston Villa.”

Right now, the Villans are down in 20th after gaining just four points from their opening 10 games to date and losing each of their last six, and are four points from safety.

They do have a game in hand, which is on Monday night away to in-form Tottenham. It is understood that Garde will be watching from the stands, with caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald taking charge on the touchline and the visitors are 15/2 to win or 4/1 to get a draw.

While Villa have been known as an established top-flight side in recent history, having not been relegated since 1986/87, but have finished precariously in the last four seasons with a best position of 15th.
