Perfect 10: How England midfielders got on in Euro 2016 qualifying
Published:
England are the only side to reach Euro 2016 with a 100 per cent record, so what contribution did the midfield make to this notable achievement? And, more to the point, who has played themselves into contention to make the cut for Roy Hodgson’s final 23-man squad for next summer?
Coral make the Three Lions 11/1 chances to win the tournament, so our experts assess the contribution and chances of those in the engine room…

Box-to-box midfielder Henderson has been steady and seen plenty of international action. His current injury is unlikely to have hampered his chances, and there is plenty of time for him to return to form at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp. Almost nailed on to be included by England.

Made the deep-lying playmaker his own, yet only featured in half of the Three Lions’ matches. Wilshere is a problem, because he has to go when fit, but will he prove it to Hodgson?

Moving to Manchester City where competition is cut-throat and there is no margin for error may have damaged former Aston Villa captain Delph’s hopes. A regular in the diamond system when fit, his club choices could dampen encouraging international displays.

Great midfield hope Barkley has been involved in half of the 10 qualifying matches, and rewarded Hodgson for his faith with two goals and assists apiece. His displays towards the end of the campaign in particular show he is on the way to reaching his potential, and only injury can deny him a place on the roster

There is nothing Hodgson likes more than the dependable, hard-working and versatile Milner. His willingness to graft and be the water-carrier is what makes him a dead cert for a squad space. Once a rampaging winger, he is now a steadying presence that is underrated by many.

Six outings in qualifying suggest Liverpool’s Lallana is a regular, but his return of just one assist is rather paltry. Hodgson will be watching him closely at Anfield under new boss Klopp. If he can get more out of the former Southampton skipper, then that should enhance Lallana’s prospects.

A regular when fit, Arsenal’s mighty Ox has made three assists and scored once during qualification. He can feel fairly certain of a place in France, it’s just whether he should be in Hodgson’s XI that is the question.

Hodgson favourite Townsend continues to dine off that catalyst goal which ultimately took England to the last World Cup, yet he’s made just three outings in Euro 2016 qualifying. His spot seems assured, though, because of a brilliant international return of three goals in nine caps.

Ageing anchorman Carrick has rarely been fit, making just one appearance in qualifying, but remains an experienced squad player for Hodgson to call upon for the France finals. He’ll turn 35 shortly after they have ended, though, and the jury is out on whether he’ll make the roster as a result of a poor record.

Swansea City man Shelvey played under Hodgson at Liverpool, and three of his four senior Three Lions caps came in qualifying. While he looked very slick against San Marino, displays against Switzerland and Lithuania were far steadier. Shelvey remains an interesting alternative to Wilshere, and looks likely to get the nod if the Arsenal playmaker cannot prove his fitness.

Spurs youngster Alli was included for the final two qualifiers with England already through, but entirely on merit. Two caps off the bench are difficult to judge set in such a context and, with Hodgson understood to have told the player he’ll be back in the Under-21 set-up, he’s unlikely to make the Euro 2016 finals roster unless there are injuries.
