Jamie Spencer expecting a big run from Beautiful Morning

SPORTSBOOK ODDS

My view of the Arc was that they went very slow, and the horses that started in the first three or four, other than the pacemaker, finished in the first three of four. Basically Golden Horn and the two Khaled Abdullah horses were there or thereabouts the whole way, and nothing else made any ground. Treve probably did very well to get into the position she did given the ground was riding fast and they’d gone so slow. Gregory Benoist should have gone faster on Treve’s pacemaker. Instead he went very slow , and on fast ground around Longchamp, if you get an easy lead it’ll be very hard to peg you back.

Golden Horn is right up there with the best horses I’ve seen. It’s a pity in many ways that he got beaten at York. It hasn’t taken the gloss off him but you’d be talking about him being right up there with the very best of them if he’d remained unbeaten. But every horse can get beaten. Indeed there are very few that don’t get beaten. You can’t take anything away from what he’s achieved. He’s been brilliant.

Frankie is riding brilliantly. I think he’s had 25 Group winners this year so he’s having a major resurgence with the backing of John Gosden. But you can’t do it without the horse. As Frankie pointed out himself when he came back two years ago and he didn’t really have a stable to rely on, it was tricky for a while. He went 50 or 60 rides before he had a winner. If you’re riding slow horses it doesn’t matter how good you are, you won’t beat anyone. It just goes to show that no matter what age you are, you’ve got to keep working hard, never rest on your laurels. Frankie seems to be really enjoying it. Everything seems to be happening steadily for him. When it’s not going his way he gets down a little bit. Everything has gone his way perfectly this year. And good luck to him. He’s a good fella, and a great ambassador for the game. You never hear him having a bad word to say about anybody.

In the 2.05pm Oh So Sharp Stakes I ride Gypsy Eyes for Charlie Hills. He thinks the absolute world of her. She got very het up before the start of The May Hill. She’s dropping down to seven furlongs and it’s a bit of a watching brief but hopefully she can get back on track. I was very impressed with the Michael Stoute filly Diploma when it won the other day at Kempton. That’s probably the one to beat.

I’m on Glory Awaits in the 2.40pm. It’s been a long time between drinks for the horse. He won a Group 2 last year but he’s been a shadow of his old self, the Glory Awaits that was second in the 2000 Guineas. He’s been disappointing really. It’s an open race. I thought Breton Rock would run well given the way the ground is, and Here Comes When was the other strong one in the race. They are the hold-up horses, and obviously Here Comes When won the race last year too.

In the Fillies Mile at 3.10pm I ride Beautiful Morning. She’s a lovely big filly. I rode her first time out at Newmarket. She was quite green that day. She improved for a bit of juice in the ground. Her dam is the only offspring of George Washington so it’s important for her for this filly to run well. Luca wouldn’t be stepping her up to this grade without good cause. It’s a strong race. Aidan has those two fillies, including Minding who beat Ballydoyle at The Curragh, and Coolmore looks good too. John Gosden’s filly Nathra looked very decent at Newbury. It’s a strong field but I think my filly will run a big race. She’s a filly that will go a mile and a quarter next year.

She’s by Galileo and first and foremost he’s the best stallion in the world. All his offspring are just very, very straightforward. They are very genuine. Galileo was very well bred and his genes have just gone down the line.

Justice Belle is my ride in the 3.45pm. She was very impressive on her previous start and then she came fourth to Bateel at Goodwood and it looked as if her form had plateaued a bit. She needs to step up to take a hand in this, but it’s huge prize money so I can see why Ed is running her. I thought Al had a good chance. He got stuck on the outside in the Melrose and when you get stuck three wide at York with no cover unless you’re Frankel you won’t figure. He’s a good bit better than that so at a big price he should run well.

In the Maiden at 4.15pm I ride a nice filly called Cosmic Storm. She’s a gorgeous big filly. Huge. I used to ride her dam for James Fanshawe, and she was a five and six furlong filly. This filly is huge. She’s all about next year but she’s ready to start. She’ll run a nice race but she’s one to look forward to for the future. In terms of the cross between her dam, and Sea The Stars her sire, she seems as if she’s about 70% like her dam as she’s got quite a bit of speed. She’s not slow.

In the last race at 4.45pm I ride Blue Waltz. This is a real ‘black-type’ hunting race. It’s a good field, and as you’d expect from a fillies Listed race at the end of the season, everybody is looking for the same thing. Blue Waltz has had two runs at the track and both were really disappointing so that’s the note of caution. But he did win very nicely at Doncaster and had the race in the bag a long way out. It was reasonable handicap so if she holds it all together and handles the track she has to have a favourite’s chance and I’m looking forward to riding her.
