Huntingdon preview: Double chance for Pipe and Scu

Published:

Trainer David Pipe and jockey Tom Scudamore look to hold leading claims of landing a double on today’s card at Huntingdon with Impulsive Americam and and Spending Time.

Impulsive American runs in the 2m handicap hurdle that opens proceedings (14.10) and may well have got in lightly.

The ex-French trained gelding won at the second time of asking for Pipe when landing 1m 4f handicap on the level at Chepstow and has since shaped really well in two runs in juvenile hurdle contests.

After making a couple of costly errors when a not knocked about fourth at Perth, Impulsive American put in a much better round of jumping when chasing home Paddy’s Runner at Bangor.

The three-year-old travelled powerfully on the heels of the leaders, and after getting caught short of room three out stayed on strongly to go down by 1 1/2 lengths.

Impulsive American made the winner, who had won his previous start by 29 lengths and is now rated 122, pull out all the stops and it was a performance which suggested he would have little difficulty winning races.

The son of American Post also looks open to further improvement now going down the handicap route, and an opening mark of 104 looks more than exploitable judged on his latest effort.

Spending Time bounced back to form when scoring last time out and looks capable of defying a rise in the weights to follow-up in the 3m 1f handicap hurdle (16.10).

The six-year-old failed to build on initial promise when in the care of Colin Tizzard, but since joining Pipe has gradually found his spark again.

After finishing a solid third at Stratford , Spending Time stayed on strongly to beat Vendredi Trois by two lengths at the same venue when last seen in action.

The handicapper has hit Spending Time with a 9lb rise for that success, but the son of King’s Theatre was rated as high as 108 in the past so his revised mark of 104 should not be beyond him.

Spending Time may also have more to offer now that he has got his head in front, and unlike the vast majority of his rivals comes into the contest in good heart.
