Lightentertainment has a terrific record at Fontwell and can further enhance it with victory in the 2m 5f handicap hurdle on today’s six-race card at the Sussex venue (15.35).

The Chris Gordon trained gelding is unbeaten in three runs at the track, and was in terrific form last season when winning five times.

In the last of those successes, Lightentertainment came from well off the pace to get up close home and beat Dell’ Arca by 1/2 a length in a class 2 contest over 2m 1f at Cheltenham off a mark of 126.

The seven-year-old was than far from disgraced when 10th of 23 to Violet Dancer in an ultra-competitive class 1 contest at Newbury off 131, and after finishing second at Haydock rounded off the campaign with a ninth of 18 to Brother Tedd in a valuable class 2 affair at Sandown.

Lightentertainment will find this class 3 contest much easier, and off a mark of 130 looks well-treated on the pick of his form.

Another plus is that fitness is unlikely to be an issue as the son of King’s Theatre won first time up last season, and with Tom Cannon in the saddle this looks a nice opening for Lightentertainment to make a winning return to action.

In the 2m 4f conditional jockeys’ novices’ handicap hurdle (16.45), Surging Seas can take advantage of what looks a lenient mark to open his account.

The gelding had some fair form in bumpers when trained by Tony Coyle, most notably on debut when third of 14 to Chidswell at Newcastle.

Surging Seas held every chance until being unable to find any extra close home to be beaten three lengths, and the winner is now rated 130 over hurdles.

The second, fourth, fifth, and sixth have all also gone on top score over hurdles and are now rated between 117 and 124.

That makes Surging Seas’ opening handicap mark of 99 look very exploitable, and although the six-year-old has failed to trouble the judge in three runs over the obstacles since joining Ali Brewer he looks a potential improver now going down the handicap route.

Connections are also fitting Surging Seas with the hood and tongue-tie for the first time, and another plus is that the son of Tiger Hill has the services of Ciaran Gethins in the saddle who is good value for his 3lb claim.

15.35: Lightentertainment (NAP)
16.10: Fergal Mael Duin
