Everton enticing for victory against Liverpool in Merseyside derby

The Merseyside derby takes centre stage on the Sky Sports schedule this Sunday, with Everton hosting an early kick-off and having every reason to believe they can end a lacklustre recent record versus local rivals Liverpool.

This fixture is usually fraught and fiery, and these bitter cross-town competitors have ended evenly in three of their past six frays. So, odds of 21/10 for another splitting of the spoils look favourable, following a duo of derby draws last season.

However, as Coral experts detailed earlier this week, Roberto Martinez’s men have perhaps their best chance of triumph in this tussle, as the Toffees seek a first victory against the Anfield outfit since 2010.

Everton, excellent value at 9/5 for victory, have been defeated in just one of the past four derbies at Goodison Park, with only one Premier League loss against Manchester City this campaign highlighting their prowess at home.

After a brief blip last term, it appears the Merseyside Blues are back to their bold best under Catalan coach Martinez’s stewardship, and this may be the best opportunity to beat an out-of-sorts Liverpool.

Club-record striker signing Romelu Lukaku could be crucial, and has bagged a brace in this fixture before. Having also hit a deadly double last time out against West Bromwich Albion, customers can back the big Belgian at 7/1 to score two or more again, or 5/1 to fire home first.

Scottish sharpshooter Steven Naismith has also proven to be a big-game predator after helping dispatch Chelsea and is 13/2 to notch last, while homegrown hero Ross Barkley is 4/1 to be on target anytime.

Defenders Seamus Coleman and John Stones are Martinez’s main injury doubts, which could give the Reds (7/4 to win) a chance of stretching an otherwise recently resilient rearguard.

Brendan Rodgers’ backline is far from sturdy itself, however, having kept just two clean sheets all term across all competitions.

With that in mind, it may be best to back the Toffees at 4/1 for victory but with both teams to score. For the guests, goals are expected from striker Daniel Sturridge, who has so far announced his return from injury sensationally and has previous prolific history against Everton.

Punters can plump for the England international at 5/1 to draw first blood, or 7/1 to nab two or more, while recent Three Lions call-up Danny Ings is 7/4 to net anytime. Christian Benteke could also be fit enough to make the bench and, as the former Aston Villa attacker smashed two past Everton last term in claret and blue, is worth a shot at 6/1 to have the final say.

Coral’s top tip: Everton are excellent at 4/1 to win with both teams to score.
