Premier League team of matchweek 5: Money can’t buy you Stones!

Following the international break, Premier League action was back in our lives once again, and what a weekend of excitement it was!

After a dramatic Matchday five, Coral football writers pick their Team of the Week, featuring those who shone out for their top tier clubs. Do you agree with our selections?

Formation: 4-3-3

Goalkeeper: Heurelho Gomes (Watford)
Swansea City are one of the in-form sides in the league at the moment, but 10-man Watford managed to overcome Garry Monk’s men on home soil to earn their first victory since being promoted.

As well as making many key saves, Brazilian shot stopper Gomes set-up the decisive strike with a well-timed, long-field ball towards his forwards, with Odion Ighalo finishing off to secure a shock 1-0 win.

Right back: Matteo Darmian (Man Utd)
Arriving at Old Trafford this summer, Darmian was overshadowed by the bigger attractions that joined him at the club, including Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Though, another star showing against bitter rivals Liverpool has fuelled further praise for the talented Italy full back, as he put in a strong shift on home soil, with Manchester United now 11/1 to win the title.

Dutchman Blind may have endured a rough time on international duty, but his performance at Old Trafford proved he is set for a pivotal season at the heart of United’s backline.

The composed, makeshift centre back kept Liverpool at bay in a 3-1 win and struck a sublime opener from a routine set-piece, only adding to his list of superb showings this campaign.

Centre back: John Stones (Everton)
The Goodison Park faithful’s rapturous rendition of ‘Money can’t buy you Stones’ was never more appropriate than during a 3-1 triumph over champions Chelsea.

The England international was a wall in the Toffees rear guard against the Blues, who tried desperately to lure him to London this summer, but he showed Jose Mourinho exactly what he had missed out on.

Left back: Brendan Galloway (Everton)
Another potential heir to Leighton Baines’ left sided throne, Galloway put in a great performance in the win over champions Chelsea, providing a deadly cross for Naismith’s opening strike on Merseyside.

Defensive midfield: Eric Dier (Spurs)
Tottenham narrowly edged out Sunderland 1-0 on their travels, with Ryan Mason grabbing the goal, but it was his midfield partner Dier that was the key performer in front of the Spurs defence.

Having previously played at centre back and out wide, Dier was cast into a holding position this time out and didn’t put a foot wrong, making a joint-league high tackles this weekend as well as the most blocks.

Having been with the Canaries for seven years, Irish playmaker Hoolahan has finally got the top tier stage to perform on and he didn’t disappoint this weekend, in what was his most potent outing for the club to date.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder danced through the Bournemouth defence to gift Cameron Jerome with the chance to open proceedings, despite holding on to his shin pad for quite some time, and he dominantly ran the game from then on.

Attacking midfield: Mesut Ozil (Arsenal)
Arsenal are quietly pushing up the top-flight table and the German assist-king Ozil was back on form, setting up both of the Gunners’ goals in a 2-0 win over Stoke City, with Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott pouncing.

Scotland international attacker Naismith became the first Premier League player to bag a hattrick against a Mourinho side, after being introduced from the bench in the first-half.

With the Toffees defence sweeping Chelsea’s futile forwards away, Naismith provided three moments of brilliance to clinch the match ball and earn a gallant home triumph.

Left forward: Riyad Mahrez (Leicester)
Leicester City continued to live up to their early season label as the surprise package, securing a stunning 3-2 comeback over Aston Villa, with Mahrez guiding them back from two goals down.

The Algerian attacker was again the Foxes inspiration, with his incredible pace and skill helping him play a part in each of his side’s three second-half goals to keep an unbeaten streak intact.

Striker: Odion Ighalo (Watford)
Latching on to Troy Deeney’s knocked-down pass, Nigeria international forward Ighalo dispatched a late winner to give Watford their maiden victory of the season at the expense of in-form Swansea. The Hornets are now 9/5 to be relegated this season.
