Everton land Lennon permanently with winger signing from Spurs

Another deal has been done on Transfer Deadline Day, with Everton, odds-on at 4/6 with Coral for a top 10 Premier League finish, making their second signing in a matter of hours, following the capture of centre back Ramiro Funes Mori who completed a £9.5m move from River Plate.

This time, it is Aaron Lennon, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Goodison Park, with the winger completing a switch in the region of £4.5m from Tottenham on a three-year deal.

Boss Roberto Martinez said: “We are delighted to welcome Aaron back to Everton. We know we are getting a player our fans know inside out. He had a major role in the second half of our season and we’re looking forward to Aaron kicking on and continuing to enjoy his football, as well as being the productive player we know he can be.

“He is well-respected in the dressing room, his experience in the Premier League is immense and he will immediately add to our squad and to the ambition we have as a club.”

Although the 28-year-old only scored two goals and contributed one assist for the Toffees, he has good Premier League pedigree, with 30 strikes and 77 assists while at Spurs.

Martinez was understood to be interested in Ukrainian winger Andriy Yarmolenko, but this move failed to materialise.

The Spanish manager wanted to add more depth to his attack and it is advantageous that he already knows what Lennon is capable of, having seen him in training.

With striker Romelu Lukaku starting the season in blistering form, if Lennon can establish an effective on-field relationship with the Belgian, the Toffees frontline will look very promising this season.

Known for his searing speed, Lennon can add an extra dimension to the team, if he can get back to his best and offer dynamism on the counter-attack.

Having started his career at Leeds United, where he came through their respected youth academy, Lennon can also offer advice and guidance to some of Everton’s younger players.

Lennon had fallen down the pecking order at Tottenham under manager Mauricio Pochettino, having seen his place taken by Mousa Dembele at the start of the season, while watching up-and-coming youngster Andros Townsend make a claim for that position.

Should he impress at Goodison Park, the winger could see his chances of getting in the England squad enhanced, having won 21 appearances during his career.
