Euro 2016 qualifiers: Germany and Poland clash in key match

Group D is still far from settled, and despite Poland currently leading Germany by one point, it is still Joachim Low’s side who are the odds-on 3/10 favourites with Coral to win the match.

This is perhaps even more surprising when taking into account the result in the reverse fixture which finished 2-0 to Poland, with emerging talent Arkadiusz Milik and substitute Sebastian Mila grabbing the goals. The duo are 7/2 and 5/1 respectively to score anytime.

Star striker, and Bayern Munich man Robert Lewandowski is the top goalscorer in qualifying with seven goals and is a huge threat to the German rearguard. His odds of 7/1 to net first are definitely worth considering.

Germany, meanwhile, haven’t been at their vintage best as they were when winning the 2014 World Cup. However, they will have hoped their 7-0 thumping of Gibraltar last time out in qualifying was a sign of things to come.

Attacker Andre Schurrle hit a hat-trick in that match and is 5/4 to get on the scoresheet anytime, while Ilkay Gundogan and Karim Bellarabi also dispatched and are both 7/2 to do so again in the same market. Max Kruse forced his way into Low’s thinking for a regular starting place, with a brace and, as a result, is 9/2 to break the deadlock.

Thomas Muller, meanwhile, who was prolifically pivotal at the World Cup in Brazil last summer dispatched in the 2-0 win over Georgia and is 4/1 to break the deadlock. The Bayern forward has also started the season in fantastic fashion, scoring five in three Bundesliga matches.

Germany’s Lukas Podolski, who was born in Poland and who has odds of 5/4 in the anytime market, shared his thoughts on the match: “It’s always a very emotional encounter for me. I play for Germany but I will never erase Poland from my heart. I was born there, have family there and my beloved club Gornik Zabrze is based there. As is my charity foundation which helps children in Warsaw.”

“If I feature and score, I will not celebrate. We are the world champions, which means we are the favourites in every game – no matter whether we face Poland, Italy or France. If we perform, we will win. However, this does not spoil my dream scenario: Poland and Germany can both go to the finals regardless of the result.”
