Ayr preview: Calypso Music can collect for Goldie

| 10.08.2015

Calypso Music has caught the eye on her last two starts and looks the answer to the 5f handicap on today’s seven-race card at Ayr (16.00).

The Jim Goldie trained filly has only had five runs, and posted an improved effort on her handicap debut at Musselburgh when fourth to Saxonette.

After being held-up well off the pace, Calypso Music stayed on strongly under tender handling to be beaten just two lengths.

The four-year-old now meets the winner on 4lb better terms, and has since gone on to post a similar effort at the same venue when a never nearer fourth to Busy Bimbo.

Judged on those runs, Calypso Music should be more than capable of winning a weak class 6 contest like this off a mark of just 45.

The daughter of Bahamian Bounty is also far less exposed than her rivals and remains open to further improvement.

Another plus is that Calypso Music now gets the professional services of Fergal Lynch in the saddle, having been partnered by inexperienced 7lb claimer in her last two starts, and this looks a nice opportunity for her to get off the mark.

In the 7f handicap (15.00), Maraakib can take advantage of a drop in the weights to make a winning debut for trainer David O’Meara.

The gelding was formerly trained by Brian Meehan, and his two best efforts last season came when there was cut in the ground.

After finishing an excellent neck second at Newbury, Maraakib opened his account in good style when landing a 7f maiden at Leicester by 2 3/4 lengths.

The three-year-old was allotted on opening handicap mark of 84 on the back of that success, but has failed to trouble the judge in three starts this season.

However, those runs have all been in class 4 company over 1m and 1m 1f and Maraakib will appreciate the drop down into class 5 level and return to 7f.

The son of Dark Angel is also now able to race off a reduced mark of 75, and with underfoot conditions holding no fears looks weighted to take all the beating.
