Wimbledon men’s quarter-finals: Murray, Federer on course to meet
As Wimbledon enters the latter stage of its competition, Coral preview the bottom half of the men’s singles quarter-finals draw, where the winner of Andy Murray’s match with Vasek Pospisil will face one of Gilles Simon or Roger Federer.
Vasek Pospisil v Andy Murray
Canadian Pospisil (10/1 for victory) has already broken British hearts once this tournament, after coming back from 2-1 down to beat James Ward in a third round thriller, but Murray (1/25) should have enough to defeat the 25-year-old.
Prior to this year’s Wimbledon, Pospisil had never progressed past the thirds round of a Grand Slam event, but his grit and determination has already brought him through three five-setters and one four set matches this tournament so far.
Although he’s lost to Murray 2-0 in all three meetings to date, back him to at least get on the scoreboard this time around, as Andreas Seppi and Ivo Karlovic have managed this SW19 event. The Scot is a more enticing 3/1 shout to win 3-1.
Tournament second-favourite Murray (9/4) lost the third set in each of those match, so back Czech decent Pospisil, who has surprisingly outlasted Canadian compatriot and last year’s semi-finalist Milos Raonic, to win one at 7/4.
Gilles Simon v Roger Federer
There have been a number of epic five-setters this year at Wimbledon so far in the men’s draw, and Simon had to come through one in round three against fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils.
He has also gone the distance with Federer twice before at Grand Slams, losing both, so take tempting odds of 7/1 for Federer to win 3-2 once more.
Simon is enjoying his best ever Wimbledon run, and the furthest at a Grand Slam since he reached the Australian Open quarters in 2009, and has already upset the odds to knock out Monfils and Tomas Berdych.
The 30-year-old is certainly inspired, after thrashing Czech Berdych 6-3 6-3 6-2 in the last round, and is a temping 5/1 shout to beat seven-time champion Federer, for the first time since 2008, too.
Swiss star Federer (title third-favourite at 4/1), though, has enjoyed a relatively easy campaign so far, dropping just one set, which is why he is priced heavily odds-on at 1/8.
Coral’s betting tip – Federer beats Simon 3-2 @ 7/1
