Wimbledon men’s final: Djokovic and Federer face-off again

Punters and tennis fans have a repeat of last year’s Wimbledon men’s singles final to look forward to, as another chapter in the rivalry between ATP world number one Novak Djokovic and all-time Grand Slam great Roger Federer is set to unfold.

What can you write about these two that hasn’t already been said? These players have similarly cool temperaments, but different approaches to tennis.

A clash of styles means there are pros and cons to backing both Djokovic and Federer. Siding with the powerful Serbian results in an odds-on 5/6 price, but Djokovic is only a very narrow favourite.

Edging Federer in five sets last year, Djokovic levelled his Grand Slam record up against the Swiss sensation at six wins apiece. There is so little to choose between them.

It’s even deadlocked at 1-1 in Wimbledon meetings, which doesn’t help shed much light on the matter. Federer’s victory over Djokovic at SW19 came in 2012 and took four sets.

On both occasions, Federer has taken the first set, so he’s worth a punt at 10/11 to get his nose in front in what everyone expects to be another classic Wimbledon final.

For silky, skillful Federer to secure a historic eighth SW19 success outright, better odds of even-money are available. Recent ATP Tour wins in Shanghai and Dubai suggest he can still rise to the occasion, as does a fairly straightforward progress to this grass Grand Slam final.

Djokovic came through a stern test of character against Kevin Anderson in the last 16, but that recovery from two sets down apart he has crushed all other opposition. That being said, both men have only lost in tiebreaks during respective rampant runs to yet another Wimbledon final.

Federer made light work of British number one and 2013 Wimbledon winner Andy Murray, winning breaks of serve at decisive moments to secure a straight sets victory, replicating what Djokovic did earlier on Friday against surprise semi-finalist Richard Gasquet.

Expect the unexpected with twists and turns aplenty, and backing your chosen champion to win in five sets is the only definitive betting advice that’s worth listening to. Federer is a fantastic 5/1 to win 3-2, while Djokovic is a nifty 9/2 for victory by that margin.

For punters who want to sit on the fence, Coral also cater for you as we offer a sensational special on this Wimbledon final. A 5/2 price says this will go to five sets (max stake £20), and you don’t have to name the winner. There’s up to £50 profit riding on that, then, and it looks a great bet.

Coral’s best bets: Call it romanticism if you must, but who among us wouldn’t want to see Federer reign at Wimbledon for an unprecedented eighth time in the Open Era? Odds of 11/10 to be champion, and 5/1 to take the title in five sets are well worth investing in from a close contest to call.
